Undoing Equal Rights

Featured Replies

I saw this on Yahoo and thought it might be of interest to some of our readers. It's US focused, but it does underline the road to equality isn't as easy as it seems.

WATCH: Homophobes Have Invented a Scary New Tactic to Undo Equal Rights

Homophobes, having lost the fight over marriage, have just launched a new stealth attack to undo equality -- and so far, they're winning.

Conservative lawmakers and religious fundamentalists have disguised their new strategy so well that you might not even have noticed what they're up to. Or at least, you won't notice until you get fired, or evicted or thrown out of school just for seeming too gay.

It's already known in Australia that anything associated with a religious organisation (eg schools, nursing homes, community organisations) is exempt from anti discrimination laws and allowed to fire people for being gay. It was just recently discussed in parliament and established and confirmed that this is still the case. Glbt people, hetero people in relationships out of wedlock, divorced people, etc etc can all legally be fired from a job at a religious owned organisation based on the principles of the religion in charge of it. Some schools have even expressed their right to expel glbt students based on that principle.

So is it still discrimination if you are discriminating against almost everyone?

Never mind, that was a rhetorical question.

While I always take the Huff with a pinch of (?)snuff, I agree that our hard-won rights, where we have them, are still perched on a shaky foundation. We still have to be on the alert to make sure they're not sneaked away from us.

Basically it's aimed at gay people as the religious organisations have expressed concern about the rise of gay rights and have said they want to protect their congregations from the 'gay agenda'
