PATTANI: -- Two Vietnamese fishing boats together with 11 crew members were captured by Thai marine police as they were illegally fishing in the Thai waters off Pattani province on Sunday.

The two fishing boats and their crews were later escorted by Thai marine police’s patrol boats to Pattani where the crews were held for detention on charges of illegal fishing in Thai waters.

During the interrogation, the crews said that they came from Gamao in southern Vietnam and fished for sea snakes and sea cucumbers which are sold to customers in Vietnam and China as aphrodisiac food.

In the past several months, dozens of Vietnamese fishing boats have been seized by the Royal Thai Navy and Thai marine police in the Gulf off Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla and Pattani provinces.
