BANGKOK: -- Newly-appointed governor of State Railways of Thailand Mr Wutthichart Kalayanamitr said that his top priority was to restore the SRT’s image in both safety and cleanliness aspects.

Regarding safety aspect, he said that the SRT would replace all the wooden sleepers which are mostly over 100 years with concrete sleepers and, for long-term project, to change the standard gauge of rail tracks to 1.435 metre.

However, he admitted that he could not guarantee that there would not be train derailment incidence after the sleeper replacement and the change of the standard gauge of the rail tracks.

As for cleanliness especially toilets, the governor said that a budget had been set aside to improve the cleanliness problem within 3-6 months.

Middle and long-term projects which are to be implemented during his governorship also include the procurement of new locomotives to replace the old ones and dual-track rail system on certain routes and skill training for staff so that they will get acquainted with new technology which came with new equipments.

Asked how he feels working under a government appointed by the junta, Mr Wutthichart admitted there was one thing in common for all kinds of government – that is a top executive cannot survive long if he/she does not work hard.

However, he said that one merit of working with a non-elected government was that there was less problem and he had the support of the government.

As for safety on board trains, the governor said that screening of staff working on trains, including night trains, had to be tightened up to ensure that they do not have criminal records. He stressed that safety on board must cover all trains and not just the so-called Lady Bogies.

As for management, the governor said that he would make use of long experiences of working at the Transport Company and apply them at the SRT.

I have the feeling that the deckchairs on the Titanic will be rearranged once again. I suppose it is all the SRT can do until proper money is spent on it, (minus 30%, naturally.)
