I don't want to see any more wasted lives over this. They should speak up and not just grin and bare it. They have a right to a fair and honest judicial system and should not just let offenders from one side be punished. If the yellows aren't prosecuted then this will just drive a deep wedge and destroy all possibility of reconciliation. One side grinning and laughing at the other as they alone get prosecuted only builds rage that will eventually explode. They were later escorted to prison for detention immediately. However their lawyer will seek bails for them again tomorrow. Two red-shirt leaders Pol Maj Sa-ngiem and Surachai did not appear at the court to hear the verdict today.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/court-sentences-15-core-red-shirts-to-four-years-in-prison-for-disrupting-asean-summit-in-pattaya -- Thai PBS 2015-03-06
Popular Post zaphod reborn
Well well. There is a God after all! Now, any jail for the yellows who shut down two international airports? The red shirts violently broke into the ASEAN summit. The yellow shirts peacefully occupied the airport. The criminal code treats these differently. While there should be prosecution of the yellow-shirt leaders, the severity of punishment will be nowhere near the same.

I don't want to see any more wasted lives over this. I couldn`t agree more, however Prayuth (and the elite that pull his strings) seem hell bent on provoking the red side of things into violence. This is because they need an excuse to continue martial law and their increasingly authoritarian behaviour. The red strategy seems very simple, sit it out and wait for the inevitable to happen and when it does the one thing that gives the junta/elite their credibility is gone. The junta know that yet again they are being out witted and are trying to cause a reaction. I find Thaksin little better than Prayuth in terms of his equally autocratic behaviour in the past, but there is no denying he just out smarts his adverseraries over and over. They rely on brute force and fight everything like a brawl, he relies on intellect and fights everything like a game of chess.

Popular Post Robby nz
Good job, that bit of silliness by the reds did immense damage to the country, but of course we see the usual bleat "What about the Yellows" well some of that has already been dealt with and no doubt the rest will be as well. Now bring on the charges against the 2010 leaders, with all the video evidence they left behind convictions should be a foregone conclusion. Then we can all have the satisfaction of seeing Mr "I will take responsibility" finally being forced to take responsibility. Cant see how some seem to think forgiving the crimes of those who committed them can ever bring reconciliation to the victims, but then I suppose if you support the criminals you see things differently.

Remember the body found at Don muang and the barricades? You make it sound as if they were there to make a peaceful statement and airport operations went on as usual. I am glad to see the people locked up who tried to stop Abhist from leaving the summit. However so far this has been a completely one sided affair.

cms22
You'd hope that the Thais (at least the reasonably intelligent ones) will be able to see through this. I do wonder though. My landlord seems an intelligent chap, holds down a good job, speaks fluent English etc etc. But through my discussions with him about politics in Thailand (a subject he occasionally likes to talk about) he completely fails to see that this is a one-sided repression. He has been completely brain-washed by the system. It is such a shame.

h90
Well well. There is a God after all! Now, any jail for the yellows who shut down two international airports?yep we should now see yellow shirt leaders doing serious jail time also. Then we should see Suthep and the Mad Monk also in prison for storming buildings and shutting down an election. Suthep himself said in 2010 it is ilegal for protestors to occupy government buildings. That is if they go after everyone and not just one side. If you read it carefully the Red Shirts are NOT doing any jail time, because they can appeal. Several yellow shirts got a verdict already and appealed....

Popular Post crobe
Well well. There is a God after all! The criminal code treats these differently. While there should be prosecution of the yellow-shirt leaders, the severity of punishment will be nowhere near the same.Oh please the PAD were armed and around 100 people were injured as a direct result of the yellow shirt actions in occupying the airport. The storming of ASEAN interrupted the free meal and drinks of a hand full of politicians. The little airport thingy did far more damage to Thailand's reputation and disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people from around the world. I was caught up in the airport shutdown and trying to get a flight back to Europe for meetings - three times I had to go back to the airport to try to change my ticket to one from KL and travelling there overland. Each time I was there I was surprised at the reaction of the occupiers - multiple people would offer me food (which they were cooking in the terminal), make sure I could get through the crowds to the ticket office and apologising to me for the delay they were causing me. It was a very different and hostile reaction from the police outside the airport who were rude and hostile both on the way in and on the way out - and on the last occasion I saw three police (thugs) trying to incite a reaction from the occupiers by picking one out to beat up with sticks. before being pushed back by the crowd and running away. The storming of the ASEAN meeting was the first of the recent "mob" protests, and it is good that those responsible stand trial Those that organised the airport sit-in should also be brought to justice (although AOT is a private organisation so it could just be a civil suit) Those inciting to riot and causing arson in 2010 should also be brought to justice and jailed for the criminal activities And those who organised the shutdown Bangkok should also be brought to book. But there is a fine line between organising a peaceful protest - even though this causes disruption (should we jail all the occupy wall street protesters, or as China would like - all the students involved in the HK protests?) and those which cause criminal damage. The courts should have an opportunity to make a transparent decision on this.

Popular Post z42
They should be denied bail, they've been convicted and sentenced already. Some wil no doubt have other bail notions in effect for other crimes. At what point do these fools actually start to rot in jail. They all deserve long stretches for inciting others to commit crime and cause instability.
