Red shirts get jail
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- THE PROVINCIAL Court of Pattaya yesterday sentenced 15 red-shirt leaders to four years in jail for their involvement in the storming of the Asean Summit venue in April 2009 that forced the government to cancel the meeting and caused national embarrassment.

Among those found guilty by the court were Arisman Pongruangrong, Nisit Sinthuprai, Surachai Danwattananusorn, Singthong Buachum, Worachai Hema, and Payap Panket.

Singthong, a Pheu Thai Party politician, said yesterday that the convicted red-shirt leaders would appeal the verdict.

During that year, leaders from Asean and its dialogue partners had gathered for the summit in the resort city of Pattaya.

Court sentences 15 core red shirts to four years in prison for disrupting ASEAN Summit in Pattaya

3-5-2015-8-42-51-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

PATTAYA: -- The Pattaya Provincial Court today sentenced 15 red-shirt core leaders to four years in prison after finding them guilty of leading red shirt protesters to storm and disrupt the ASEAN Summit in Pattaya in 2009.

The 15 red-shirt leaders who included Arisman Pongruangrong, Nisit Sithiprai, Surachai Danwatananusorn and Pol Maj Sa-ngiem Samranrat were prosecuted by Pattaya prosecutor after they led several hundreds of red-shirt protesters to break into the ASEAN Summit held on April 11 in 2009 at Royal Cliff Beach Hotel in Pattaya, forcing the summit to collapse.

After the sentences were handed down, the court denied temporary release on bails for all the convicts. They were later escorted to prison for detention immediately. However their lawyer will seek bails for them again tomorrow.

Two red-shirt leaders Pol Maj Sa-ngiem and Surachai did not appear at the court to hear the verdict today.

Well well. There is a God after all! Now, any jail for the yellows who shut down two international airports?

The red shirts violently broke into the ASEAN summit. The yellow shirts peacefully occupied the airport. The criminal code treats these differently. While there should be prosecution of the yellow-shirt leaders, the severity of punishment will be nowhere near the same.

It is amazing someone would post such non-sense. it was not an occupation it was a force shutdown that wreaked havoc to the country and air travelers all over the world. Remember the body found at Don muang and the barricades? You make it sound as if they were there to make a peaceful statement and airport operations went on as usual.

I am glad to see the people locked up who tried to stop Abhist from leaving the summit. However so far this has been a completely one sided affair.

like conflict in the majority of countries the 'spoils ' will go to the victor's.

You'd hope that the Thais (at least the reasonably intelligent ones) will be able to see through this. I do wonder though.

My landlord seems an intelligent chap, holds down a good job, speaks fluent English etc etc. But through my discussions with him about politics in Thailand (a subject he occasionally likes to talk about) he completely fails to see that this is a one-sided repression. He has been completely brain-washed by the system. It is such a shame.

yep we should now see yellow shirt leaders doing serious jail time also. Then we should see Suthep and the Mad Monk also in prison for storming buildings and shutting down an election. Suthep himself said in 2010 it is ilegal for protestors to occupy government buildings. That is if they go after everyone and not just one side.

If you read it carefully the Red Shirts are NOT doing any jail time, because they can appeal. Several yellow shirts got a verdict already and appealed....

Agreed.

About time Thai 'justice' showed it's politicians they aren't above the law and can't act like hooligans whenever they feel just cos they don't agree with something.

More please.
