Harrison Ford badly hurt in LA plane crash: reports

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - "Indiana Jones" star Harrison Ford was critically injured Thursday when his small plane crash-landed on a golf course outside Los Angeles, media reports and officials said.

The 72-year-old suffered multiple gashes to his head and was left bleeding after the crash of a vintage two-seater plane, according to the TMZ celebrity website, publishing a picture of the downed plane, its nose cone ripped open.

A Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, who did not identify Harrison, said the pilot of a single-engine plane was critically injured in the crash.

"We cannot disclose any of our patients’ names," spokesman Erik Scott told AFP, recounting the early afternoon crash at the Penmar Golf Course in Venice, southwest of Los Angeles.

"When we arrived on scene we had a small aircraft that was down on Penmar Golf Course, near the Santa Monica airport. We had a solo occupant, an adult male, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

"Fortunately no one (else) was injured and the NTSB will perform an investigation," he said, referring to the National Transportation Safety Board.

The KTLA television station cited witnesses as saying Ford was helped out of the plane, and that he could use his legs.

It showed video footage of the plane, which gashed a stretch of grass on the golf course before coming to a halt the right way up.

No more details were immediately available.

Last June Ford broke his leg on the set of the new "Star Wars" movie at Pinewood Studios outside London. Filming began in May last year on the new episode of the iconic franchise, directed by blockbuster filmmaker J.J. Abrams.

Ford is back as smuggler Han Solo, Mark Hamill will return as Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher, 57, reprises the role of Princess Leia.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Harrison Ford crash-landed his vintage airplane at a Los Angeles golf course Thursday, an official said. He suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The actor's single-engine plane went down at about 2:30 p.m. (2230 GMT) in LA's Venice area, authorities said.

The pilot was breathing and conscious when he was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in fair to moderate condition, Los Angeles fire officials said.

Fire officials would not confirm the pilot's identity. However, an official familiar with the crash said it was Ford. The official spoke only condition of anonymity because of privacy restrictions.

The 72-year-old "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" actor is an aviation enthusiast who often flies out of the Santa Monica Airport. Penmar Golf Course, where the crash happened, is just west of a runway there.

The plane appeared to be a World War II-era vintage training plane. It was mostly intact after the wreck, and Ford was the only person aboard.

Nobody on the ground was hurt, but people rushed the scene and started helping Ford.

Jeff Kuprycz was golfing when he saw the plane taking off.

"Immediately you could see the engine started to sputter and just cut out, and he banked sharply to the left," he said. "He ended up crashing around the eighth hole."

Kuprycz said the plane was about 200 feet (61 meters) overhead when it plunged to the ground.

"There was no explosion or anything. It just sounded like a car hitting the ground or a tree or something. Like that one little bang, and that was it," Kuprycz said.

Ford is cast to play swashbuckling space-age soldier-of-fortune Han Solo in his fourth "Star Wars" movie, set for release in December.

The original "Star Wars" in 1977 made Ford an overnight star who remains an A-list actor with several colossal box office hits in his credits. He played whip-slinging archaeologist Indiana Jones in four movies in that series.

He's been married since 2010 to "Ally McBeal" actress Calista Flockhart.

Ford got his pilot's license in the late 1980s and has served as a spokesman to various airline associations. In 2009, he stepped down as chairman of a youth program for the Experimental Aircraft Association.

His flying made headlines in 2001 when he rescued a missing Boy Scout on his helicopter.

Nearly a year before, he rescued an ailing mountain climber in Jackson, Wyoming. He has also volunteered his services during forest-fire season, when rescue helicopter are busy fighting blazes.

The actor has said his rescues "had nothing to do with heroism."

"It had to do with flying a helicopter. That's all," he said.

Earlier it said the engine quit. If this quote from above is true is sounds like he stalled the wings and dropped nose first. I saw a picture of it from NBC and it does look like it hit very hard nose first. Most of the damage is forward of the firewall.

"sounded like a car hitting the ground"

Because cars fall from the sky all the time? Huh!

So he was... flying solo?

I had the TV on to NBC News when they first reported it. They said he had a passenger. First reports are often corrected and I haven't heard of a passenger since.

I'm just happy that they are saying he's "OK".

I thought that no harm can ever come upon Indiana Jones.

I like the man very much and I wish a speedy recovery for him.

So do I.

He has a ranch near my brother's place in Wyoming.

The local people out there seem to like him. He has a good reputation.

Get well soon.

No disrespect to Ford and it's good he survived but the television news went overboard.

From what I saw of CNN they switched to their special report routine including one of their studio panels to examine every aspect.

BBC World had it as item 1 on the headline list with the crash at La Guardia airport item 2.

The report then devoted around 7 mins to the Ford story but the commercial aircraft with 127 people on board skidding off the runway was given around 3 mins.

Not my idea of priorities but a Hollywood personality trumps 127 mere mortals and lucky everyone is still mortal.

Seems that the pilot made a pretty good job of landing the aircraft with so many trees nearby, not an easy manoeuvre with (presumably) a failed engine. Wishing him a speedy recovery and return to flying.

At 72 he's reprising his role as Han Solo, and gadding about in an aeroplane. Silly old git, grow old gracefully, will ya!

It's pretty obvious who the "silly old git" is....and with that attitude, who is an ace non achiever in his life, and it's clearly not HF

What do you like about him? It can't be his acting!
Indiana Jones is a great actor but I don't see what that's got to do with Harrison Ford, may the force be with you Harrison and your fluffy mate.

Jeez, another one without a sense of humour. It was a joke - have a nice day.

Hollywood has a lot to answer for.

There should've at least been an explosion followed by a fireball, and bits and pieces flying though the air, and...
