Making food in Thai (semi-commercially)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Have a friend of a friend who's considering going into producing food here in LOS, just wondered whats required legally re Thai FDA etc

Read a bit up here http://www.fda.moph.go.th/eng/food/index.stm

Just wondered if any BM's had had experience in the food business here (ie not restaurants, more producing food for restaurants, fairs, markets, supermarkets etc) and would be interested to hear how they got on/are getting on.

Cheers

SB

Ps EDITED cos Subject should read in THAILAND not in THAI !

Look!, if your wife wants to sell her homemade brownies.....take it to the open market......like next to the one who is making coffee. set up you little table and start selling. Plain and simple. Give one or two brownies to coffee guy, just to keep him happy tho!

Providing you are planning to package food to sell, and I don't mean in the local market. You will need to apply for and pass the Thai FDA อย (or yor) licence. This can be a long process. All packaged food in Thailand is required to obtain this. Firstly you will have to open a commercial property and kit it out with stainless steel equipment, hand washing sinks, pvc curtains etc. Your friend will need to go to their local district office and obtain a certificate to sell goods. This costs 40 baht. Once your friend has this and the production property is of a standard, you can go to the Thai FDA and apply for the or yor licence. You will need to submit documents including plans of the building, manufacturing process, cleaning process, plus your certificate from the district office and copies of ID etc. If you have less than 7 people it is easier and there are less requirements. Your product will also have to be sent to a lab and tested for bacteria. The total time from start to finish from submitting the documents can take up to 3 months, providing your "factory" passes the inspection. This is just a brief outline. If you have further questions, you can PM me.
