PM says land and building taxes are necessary

9-3-2558-12-16-37-wpcf_728x408.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha stressed the need for the government to impose land and buildings taxes but said that the matter remains inconclusive and it may take months or even 1-2 years before the taxes come into force.

He said that he understood the concern of house and building owners with the increased tax burden. But he said that he and government officials who are also taxpayers will not be exempted and liable to taxation as well.

He explained that before the land and buildings taxes are to be enforcible, the government would have to get prepared with land price appraisals, town planning and many other details.

Pleading for public understanding, the prime minister explained that the government would need funding to implement several infrastructure projects and if it could not collect enough taxes such projects would not be possible.

Asked whether tax collection has fallen short of target, the prime minister retorted that the collection has fallen short because there were many people who have evaded paying taxes.

He said that he himself paid several tens of thousand baht of taxes each month from his salary as the prime minister at 75,000 baht plus other allowances.

He pointed out that the government earlier decided to delay the increase of value added tax from seven to 10 percent because it didn’t want to add more burden to the people.

He is becoming too cautious and more like a politician.

I don't agree with his decision of delaying land and building taxes.

Those taxes are overdue in Thailand.

In 2 years the politicians in charge will do nothing, fearing the loss of votes.

You have the power in your hands Prime Minister, don't let it go wasted.

Now is the time to impliment laws that will help Thailand in the future.

Wait a minute!! He only gets 75,000 baht a month as PM, but the vice admiral at the centre of the nepotism stories gets almost double the salary of a PM?

Good on him paying his taxes and those other hisos in their 10 million baht plus homes but how so those living in shacks without the same amenities compare?

I'm all for paying such taxes but when you have a home values in excess of several million baht compared to your neighbours in one that cost no more than 20,000 baht, I'd hope that rhe bean counters take a decent enough time to evaluate homes accordingly

Thailand's tax system needs major reform where by those who can afford do pay, and to eradicate the grey and black economies...

Just too recap, remember the billionaire Trillionaire businessman turned PM, now PM in exile sold off his telecom's empire without paying any tax on his gains?

He did say he loves the poor, and did distribute part of the country's tax collection to them and... wait a minute, money from others, but never from his own wealth...

What was that song from the BeeGees?

Oh yes...How Deep Is Your Love?

One post referring to the government as a dictatorship has been removed.

From the pinned topic in the News Forum:

Please use discretion in your references to the government. Phrases which can be considered as anti-coup will be removed. Referring to Thailand or the government as a dictatorship, military dictatorship or other such terms will be removed.

A new Con

as for paying tax on the house in her name its not much different from paying tax on the car in my name. our joint incomes end up in the same pot and our outgoings go out the same way

Just as well , he loves poor people , because there could soon be a whole lot more.

There are already a whole bunch of taxes on a local level especially for businesses.

I am beginning to wonder whether this is a last ditch bid at face saving. Because it doesn't seem any of his numerous foreign "friends" have been very forthcoming with the cash for the mega projects.

totally agree, many are already struggling with the high rises in living expenses over the last few years and now dumping property taxes on them is going to be crippling for some. i'm all for fighting inequality but this stinks of taxing the poor. 1 million baht wouldn't buy a shed in any place larger than a small town these days.

Be fare though Basil, he didn't break the law. He made sure he changed it without any discussion the day before.

Yes there is the problem in a nutshell - and will it be any different with a property tax?

The poor usually sleep under bridges or in slums. They don't have money to buy a property.

This is what the result of fully implemented BRAINWASHING looks like !!!

1. Why should anybody pay taxes on a land or a house ? ... there is not a single reason for this other than government greed.

2. Why would people think these taxes would be justified ? ... because they don't think for themselves !

3. Why will anybody who questions these taxes be attacked ? ... because this is how brainwashing works ! [just follow orders and never question anything]

4. ALL western government are in a certain way dictatorships ... why should Thailand be any different ?

Mr. Obama turns out to be the biggest tyrant on the planet [with EXECUTIVE ORDERS which are only done by Dictators (!!!)] so this

is actually proven fact !

5. Nobody should be forced to pay taxes on what he ownes !!! There might be a debate if income from properties should be taxed, but there is NO reasoin at all to tax any property of an individual at all !!!

Several 10' of thousand of taxes per month on a salary of 75K + allowance? ?

Half a million in allowance is it?

Rather ironic that he plans to use the money for a train project when he can't see the "train wreck" right under his nose.

Rather ironic that he plans to use the money for train project when all train's projects already are planned to be financed by China, Korea, Japan, Laos and other generous sponsors..

Tho in all fairness he stated infrastrucutre projects, doesn't specify which one ones in OP.

Only 75,000 Baht a month as PM? But when he was army chief, his annual salary was 1.4 million according to Wikipedia.

Was he that concerned about the country that he was prepared to take a cut in annual salary of 500,000 Baht in order to become PM?

A very noble gesture indeed.

Unfortunately I am not sure that the money will be used for purposed directly tied to the tax revenue. There are always "essential" services that have to be funded (public roads, public parks, public transit / i.e. funding for new MRT / Skytrain projects, fire and of course "uncorrupt" policing). Of course all money that is collected by the police now through instant fines should go into the same revenue and dispersed across all these services and not into the police station and police pockets (permits for street vendors, etc.). If not for taxes (including land taxes) where is the funding for non-corrupt service suppose to come from?
