BANGKOK: -- Four senior police officers of Don Mueang police station were transferred to inactive posts at the operations centre of Metropolitan Police Bureau today following a raid of an illegal gambling den in Don Mueang area Wednesday night.

The four officers were identified as Pol Col Surachet Bandhit, the superintendent of the police station; Pol Lt-Col Patikorn Sornchai, the deputy superintendent; Pol Lt-Col Akarawin Sukonthavit, the deputy superintendent; and Pol Maj Samitthikit Intharahom, the suppression inspector.

A combined force of military personnel and police raided the illegal gambling den on Songprapa road in Tambon Seegun and arrested 40 gamblers as well as the den supervisor, Mr Soravit Nimcharoen.

As a formal practice following a raid of an illegal gambling den, senior police officers of the police station which has jurisdiction over the area where the den is located will be removed temporarily to pave way for an investigation.

Pol Maj-Gen Itthipol Piriyapinyo, deputy commissioner of MPB, said that the probe would determine whether the four officers were negligent in their performance of duty or not.

"Pol Maj-Gen Itthipol Piriyapinyo, deputy commissioner of MPB, said that the probe would determine whether the four officers were negligent in their performance of duty or not."

You need a probe to say that the guys responsible for law and order in that area were sitting in an illegal gambling den which they should have closed down ?

Maybe an alien abduction style one for whoever thinks its necessary.

Where did you get the "sitting in an illegal gambling den" from?

You just made that bit up.

It is also a serious allegation and the laws on defamation are very harsh in Thailand............

Correct, they are merely the senior officers under whose jusrisdiction this Den fell, they weren't caught redhanded inside with fistfuls of aces and cigars.

Although, knowing what we know about the structure of things here, it's almost a foregone conclusion that they were taking kickbacks to allow the place to operate.

The report does not say that the four officers were sitting in the casino. Read the report properly and you'll see that it is routine for senior officers to be moved while the probe takes place.

But if they shut it down, how can they then afford the new cars, houses, mistresses etc that is all paid for by the illegal operators paying them huge amounts of money every month to keep it open ...?

After all, the Police aren't in the business of law enforcement or actually doing their jobs, merely "revenue collections" ....

You've hit the nail on the head as to why, unlike neighbouring countries, Thailand does not legalise casinos. If it was all above board all those involved with the illegal dens would lose millions which would otherwise go to the taxman and be invested in new schools, hospitals, transport etc. Better it goes into the pockets of the corrupt. As those who make the laws allegedly benefit most from such illegal activities, nothing will change..

"...the probe would determine whether the four officers were negligent in their performance of duty or not..."

So no possibility of corruption here also...like taking money to look the other way.

If a tailor shop opens in a police jurisdiction, the police will show up to shake him down.

Anybody who understands the slightest bit about Thailand will know that if there is

a casino operating, the police are in it up their necks..Chuwit has pointed this out many

times.. In order to stop this, the government actually needs to implement SEVERE

penalties for police protection of casinos. At that point it will stop. Right now the police

rake in millions of baht from shakedown money, and if they actually get caught, it is a

transfer to an inactive post, the story dies away, and then it is right back to business as

usual..........Amazing Thailand indeed..

But general you wouldn't want me to raid my own gambling den would you? How can I afford to keep up my 6 brothels and 5 short time hotels. Not to mention my drug smuggling operation and fishing fleet.
