Pronunciation of มั้ย - sometimes sounds like 'may' instead of 'my'

Featured Replies

Sometimes I hear the word มั้ย pronounced 'may' instead of 'my'. This is the word to indicate a yes/no question.

As an example, go to this site:

http://www.thai-language.com/id/142459

and then listen to the first two sentence examples

"See what I mean? I told you so."

"Will the colors fade/run?"

In the first sentence I hear "my" (rhymes with eye or I).

In the second sentence I hear "may".

Do you hear it too?

Interesting. I would like to hear some comments on this, as a relatively new Thai learner.

For anyone who has trouble hearing the audio I have attached the recording to this post.

The sentences are:

เห็นมั้ย...บอกแล้วไง

henR maiH baawkL laaeoH ngaiM
"See what I mean? I told you so."

สีจะตกมั้ยเนี่ย?

seeR jaL dtohkL maiH niiaF

"Will the colors fade/run?"

mai.mp3

I've heard it pronounced that way but not very often. Perhaps just a lazy/slangy way of saying it (and sometimes I think I hear what best can be described as a sound between "my" and "may."

Much more common to me is the different pronunciation of the ไม่ in ไม่ได้. I'd guess that 30-40% of the time ไม่ is spoken as "me" and not "my." Again, I think it's just a lazy/slangy way of saying it. I've even used the "me" pronunciation on purpose before and nobody bats an eye or misunderstands.
