Basil B
What is not said, was the ticket stolen before or after the draw? More to the point, did he know it was a winning ticket, and had he told anybody??? This sort of thing does not do the image of Buddhism much good. geriatrickid
Perhaps the monk needs a refresher course in Buddhism. I suggest the section on avoiding avarice and games of chance. Next question, will any senior monks talk to him about his inappropriate activity?

MaiChai
Divine intervention!! Monks are not allowed to gamble!! Why does a monk need to buy lottery tickets? Surely he has given up the normal world to live in the Buddhist world? Crosses my mind that man who has no income decided to become a monk and then bought some lottery tickets. If he won the lottery would he give up being a monk so he can enjoy his winnings (wine, women, sex, etc)? Reason I mention this is I know of a man of dishonest reputation who did become a monk because he could not get a job because of his bad past. When he had made sufficient money as a monk to afford to get back into society, he dis robed and became a layman again. Then he found himself a wife and now has two new children. If you want to become a good Buddhist, put your faith in the teachings of Buddha and not in a man in orange clothing... rapom
Lotto drawing on March 16. Next day check winning numbers in paper. Do you, waste no time in the claiming prize or put tickets in bag for safekeeping and they get stolen 4 days after drawing. That's what everyone would do. Makes sense to me. Duh. I guess interrogating the ticket vendor, will solve the crime. Everyone knows ticket vendors have photographic memory, of all the lottery ticket numbers they sold and who bought them. Good luck 55555

khaowong1
I do know for a fact, that sometimes people who give food, clothing etc. to monks, sometimes give them a lotto ticket. And also for a fact, that sometimes monks buy lotto tickets from the money that people sometimes give them. Gambling is against the rules for monks, so both should be avoided.. But it happens, I've seen it often. But I just can't for the life of me understand how this deputy abbot could have kept his winning ticket in his bag when he knew it was a big winner. He should have gave it to either the abbot or his family. I have this strange feeling, he was going to dis-robe and start a new family. Otherwise he wouldn't have been hiding it. Just my intuition.
