webfact
4G licences to go for auctions in November BANGKOK: -- The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) will put on auctions its fourth generation mobile phone services for its 1800 MHz and 900 MHz spectrums starting November this year. The auctions of the fourth generation licences came after Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha call for the national regulator to escalate the 4G mobile phone licence auction to boost economy. At the press conference Monday, NBTC secretary general Takorn Tanthasith said the auction of the 4G mobile services on 1800 MHz spectrum will begin on November 11 this year while on the 900 MHz spectrum will begin on December 15.He said there will be two licences on each spectrum for grabs. He said the NBTC will also ask the International Telecommunications Union if its earlier studied starting price of the auction on 4G licences at 16 billion baht still appropriate. He expected to know the reply from the ITU in June, before kicking off the first auction in November. He also expected bidders for the 4G licences at three existing operators. sfokevin
Happily in keeping with glorious PM philosophy secretary general Takorn Tanthasith has also ordered that no babes in miniskirts can be used to sell the new 4G spectrum... LuckyLew
Would be funny if no one bid No like the current providers care much about speed and service
retarius
Why has it taken so long to organize this auction? If I remember the 3G auction took years to take place and then was the subject of lawsuits for other years on end. How can we see reports of Thailand being the IT hub of AEC if it has 3rd world IT infrastructure and use of English is rudimentary here? And being the hub of eco-cars? And be the hub of god knows what else.....who thinks these hub things up?

There is already 4G LTE 2100MHZ available from True and Dtac. Isn't 2100 an existing 3G frequency that use for 4G trials, and which will be canceled once the official licenses are available. Why don't they use 2300mhz frequency as been earmarked long time ago, and in addition the 2600mhz as announced last week?

Yme
While Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) dillies and dallies over when, or even whether, it can hold 4G/LTE spectrum auctions later this year Vietnam authorities have said they will introduce 4G/LTE for commercial use in 2016. Meanwhile, in Thailand where the NBTCs much delayed 3G auctions in 2012 still causes some people to cringe at its mere mention, industry and the ruling junta are all but falling over themselves attempting to get the regulator to act. As Don Sambandaraksa points out in telecomasia.net., “chaos and confusion reigns with new auction laws not yet passed, new governance bodies still being formed and little idea as to what is even on the auction block, how the auction will be held or even who will be eligible for the auction”.
