Govt plans to use article 44 to solve human trafficking in fishery industry

BANGKOK: -- Prayut government is planning to apply Article 44 in the interim charter to solve many challenges that are needed to handled urgently, said deputy government spokesman.

Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that the government will use the power under the article to cap the skyrocketing prices of lottery and eradicate human trafficking in the fishing industry.

Section 44, which empowers the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to issue orders and take action it deems appropriate, is expected to enable the government to deal with pressing issues more quickly. The premier said he would have the martial law revoked and replace it with the article.

Section 44 has been welcomed by the financial and the private sectors. The Bank of Thailand (BOT) said Section 44 should bring back foreign investors’ confidence if they are provided with correct information in relation to its application.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Chamber of Commerce have also voiced their support for the move.

Again another press release about nothing? The lotteries are a problem along with human trafficing?

But how will they fix either problem?

Will they go after the culprits? and prosecute them.

Article 44 will give the PM the power to go after them, prosecute and jail them if found guilty.

What's funny it will be the same few voices that scream human and civil rights who complain about inaction/lack of results from the current government.

Lets wait and see how the PM uses Article 44 and then pass judgement.

The current laws against human trafficking give the government the power to prosecute and jail human traffickers.

Section 44 just gives the junta the right to ignore due process, a fundamental right under rule of law and democracy.

Due process in Thailand depends on the financial resources that you have at your disposal As they say in legal circles "Justice delayed is justice deigned" and that sums up the situation for the poor. Will article 44 change the situation only time will tell.

Government also plans to use Article 44 to:

- raise rice prices 2x market

- raise rubber prices 2x market

- increase GDP growth to 5%

- make it rain where there is drought

- make a drought where is flooding

- put a Thai on the moon by 2016

- make the EU beg for Thai seafood

- make the US beg for Thai seafood

- make all political parties disappear

It's like a book of magic spells.

Despite the scale of the number if crimes in that industry, NOT ONE owner or operator of these boats has been arrested. Before there are large numbers of arrests, the efforts can't be taken seriously. Let's wait and see..

This is of great concern, as a lot of small fish and other enemies of the Junta will get caught in this net, we know the kingpins will continue this heinous crime with impunity.

We can be assured those who are monitoring the situation will continue to do so and will not be fooled.

Maybe the govt will use Article 44 to put some of those boat owners/operators in prison...give those owners/operators a taste of what slavery prison style feels like.

What a bunch of bullcrap. They should have at least done an April fools press release where someone stands up and says in English "I am going down to the docks to kick ass and take names...I will arrest all of these lowlifes if it is the last thing I do."

I would pay money to see that.

Just hope and trust that the government will not abuse article 44 for political persecutions and the process is transparent so no extrajudicially conviction and no scrapegoats sentencing to protect the powerful elites and uniforms. Detention without charges, military courts and absolute power give a dark image.

Fat chance of that....power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.....a cast iron law.....absolute power is never not abused.

You probably right. Even before the ink is dried, the media report today quoting him promising extensive use of this harsh power. Media is being warned. So be careful what you write. Dark clouds are besetting the country.
