Defense Min poised to ensure public safety during Songkran

BANGKOK, 3 April 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Defense is coordinating with related units nationwide on the provision of safety for holidaymakers throughout the upcoming Songkran Festival.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan chaired a videoconference with heads of regional defense offices in Chon Buri, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai and Phuket in order to ensure their preparedness for security operations during the Songkran holiday.

The officials reported that they are integrating efforts with police, soldiers and the civil sector, both in Bangkok and in their respective areas, for the protection of people’s lives and properties. They voiced full readiness to prevent road accidents and crimes, especially in popular tourist spots and venues of Songkran festivities.

Gen Prawit advised the officials that more emphasis should be placed on preventive measures for accidents as well as prompt response to emergency situations. Public awareness should also be raised on the causes of accidents so as to encourage more participation in prevention efforts.

In addition, the police and the military have been instructed to enforce the law more stringently. People, meanwhile, are urged to contribute to public safety by notifying authorities of accidents or any suspicious activities or individuals.

If there us no external threat to the country, to the extent that the military are able to concentrate on the organisation of Songkran, then perhaps there is scope for a dramatically reduction in the defence budget?

Some of you people have short memories to suit ? YINGLUCK was the last minister of defense, why was the spending not curbed then, and what did she do as the defense minister ??

You have a valid point about the Thai military always having massive budgets. BUT why pick on them now because they are in Power ?? good excuse for bashing I suppose.

Don't let anyone drive on the roads. Save 1000 lives easy.

Other than that everyone should wear helmets on motorbikes and people not drive drunk. Probably have more luck in seeing the flying pink elephant?

Ginjag, do you have posts that don't refer to the Shins?

Haven't the military just increased their budget? Jag makes a good point in redirecting the monies into saving lives over a very special holiday period.

No he doesn't . Some months ago he boasted about keeping records of those of us whose posts he regarded as being "on the side of the Shins".

You get used to his ranting eventually, its a bit like interference on your tv during a thunderstorm-irritating but basically irrelevant!
