Hi, my annual multi entry visa based on marriage is nearly up for expiry, I've heard a visa has to be first cancelled by the issuing embassy/consular before a new one can be issued (if it's not yet expired that is), so I would be returning to the embassy/consular who issued the current visa,, now for the sake of my work rotation I'd prefer to have a new visa in my PP before I go off to work (offshore outside thailand), rather than enter next time on visa exempt and go off to apply for new visa thereafter,,

however I'm a wee but concerned that it may bring uncalled for attention from the immigration officer if he sees that I have a cancelled visa as a result of doing this,, I know also that it is unlikely to be a problem for me entering on visa exempt, but my preference would be to get the new visa

So my question, is there likely be any negativity from immigration in doing this? Anyone done this I'd be grateful for feedback

What you heard is wrong. Thai Embassy/consulate does not cancel an issued visa, and you can get another one even with a still valid one in passport.

Ok, hopefully ubonjoe will confirm what you said Paz, I thought I read it somewhere on TV, but on checking back on my history I can't find the link to it, maybe (and hopefully) as you say I am wrong

Thanks

Properly issued visa are never cancelled.

If you need a little more time you can get a 60 days extension, cost Bt 1,900, and a re-entry permit for 1,000. Depending on dates, that may work better than getting a new visa before its expiration.

I'll be off to work well before the 90 day period is up, the 1 year non imm o multi works ok for me, entered 2 weeks back and I'll be away before end of this month for 8 weeks working, current visa expires in mid may, just thought it better to go apply for a new non imm o based on marriage before I go to work, that will be approx 4 weeks before expiry of current visa,, more for piece of mind on my return than anything else,,,,

Correct. However the current situation for O&G workers is that immigration gives interview to those entering visa exempt more that 6 times in 12 or 18 months, and then let them enter anyway.Since you have done none of these, you can also do some to postpone getting the visa without any problem

Yes but the point in my applying for a new visa before I leave, to avoid any unnecessary issues, including any possible interviews or such, especially since being away from wife and kids for so long, not that I've anything to hide, just would rather avoid any inconvenience if possible.

Thanks anyway Paz for your advice on this

You can get a new visa before you leave if you want to.

You could also do another 90 day entry or apply for a 60 day extension and get a re-entry permit to keep the remainder of that entry/extension valid when you return.from work. Then go out for the new visa.

Thanks as always for your info joe,, don't think I can apply for extension before leaving because I'll only have been in country for just over 4 weeks total at the time I leave, it's the 1 year date of the visa that will have expired before I renter next time, I thought extensions could only be applied for during last 30 days of any 90 day entry, Or am I mixing up with something else?

When I mentioned the extension I was not aware of how long you had been here. So that is not an option now.

You could also get the re-entry permit for you current entry but it may not have much time left when you come back if you are going to be gone 8 weeks.

Getting a new visa is still an option. As I said you can get one without a problem.

Just to update, I received my new multi entry non imm o 1 year visa from savannakhet on Tuesday,

now I remember where I was told an unexpired visa had first to be cancelled by the issuing consulate before a new one issued,, it was from the counter staff at the Thai consulate in savannakhet last year,

my wife asked the same question at the consulate in savannakhet this week and was given the same answer as was given last year, but this time by a different member of staff.

However on checking my old (but still valid) visa, I see no stamp over it or anything saying cancelled, unless it's down as cancelled in their system,,, now I'm not saying anyone on here who said an issued visa cannot be cancelled is wrong, but I'm just updating what we were told in savannakhet on two consecutive years by two different staff members, but as I said I cannot see no markings on the old visa
