The hell with Win8 and 8.1, I'm staying with Win7 and then going straight to Win10 which I am happy with on virtual machine so far.

The hell with those pesky Windows gadgets as well which look so old. Rainmeter and its wonderful array of addons is a sight for sore eyes.

Many people who have problems with windows have illigal copies with all kinds of crap and spyware on it. I used to have loads of problems when I had copies. With original versions I don't have this problem. Plus I dont dowload everything I check first.

Got 8.1, the 64 but version with Windows shells running on the school computer also changed it in a way that it works well.

I agree with one poster saying that you usually download other unwanted stuff, when using free versions.

Your computer is only as good as the programs you put on.

I bought Win 8 and put it on my new HP All-In-One, and it didn't take long to learn to hate it. Constant freeze ups, crashes, and things just not doing what they are supposed to do. Finally gave it to my son, who is only home on weekends, and bought a Mac Mini. Smartest move I've made in a long time.

Same thing happened to me. I checked the specs carefully and compared these with prices in Australia. I bought a HP All-in-One, at exactly the same price as in Aussie.

A few months later, I did a Windows update, and the whole thing crashed: turned out the OS was not legit and I had to take it back to the store and have things reinstalled. This happens about every 6 months, which is a nuisance, but at least they don't charge me for the time.

I'll install a paid-for edition of Windows 10 when it's available.

So true, many computer users have no idea what they are doing. It is like Thais driving, no idea what they are doing.

They download any software they hear of or "recommended" by an "expert" friend.

Then after testing the newly installed software, they think just un-install the software is enough, it never is.

Stuff stays in the registry, settings, AppData and other places on your computer.

Overtime that will accumulate and slow your computer and cause conflicts, like freezing the computer.

There are plentiful good cleanup programs out there, also for free.

Use Google and do research.

Stop blaming your computer issues on the OS, it is 99.99% of the time your lack of knowledge on how to service and maintenance it.

You change the oil in your car/motorbike, check the air pressure in your tires.

Well your computer also needs a little loving, instead of cursing and getting to a stage you just want to throw it out of the window, been there, have not done itfacepalm.gif

MicroSoft had a few bad OS (2000, ME, Vista, W8.0, probably forgot some) and a few good ones (95, 98, XP, W7 and W8.1[with the changes I did in the first post]).

Judgment on W10 will be done in a few years, way to early now.

Windows 10 is fast, stable and usable.

I really like having a start menu back and a single placeholder for notifications and settings.

It's excellent.

Regarding the W 8.1 Ultimate start up and log in screen using a password; I see there is a place to use a photo but for the life of me I can't find where or how to insert a picture. Does any one know how please? Thank you.

I hated 8.0 when it came out so much I gave my brand new Toshiba to my wife. Now that 8.1 came out I have no issues with it except I don't like the search system. Just ordered a Dell 2 in1, 13in 7000 laptop. It has 1 TB and 8gb. Plus i7 and a free win10 update if I want it. All this for under $1000, and so not looking to update to MSpro3 anymore.
