Govt claims positive moves on social front since taking over

BANGKOK: -- THE GOVERNMENT has made several achievements on the social front over the past six months, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his Cabinet members claimed yesterday.

The current administration started working on September 12. In the following six months, the government has been serious about boosting educational quality, reducing social inequality, improving laws and tackling various social issues, according to official statements.

"We have recognised the need to solve the shortage of teachers and enhance teachers' abilities," Prayut said, jokingly adding that Thai students these days could not even do math problems in their head.

The PM added that broadcasts of classes conducted by good tutors like Kru Ou (Uraiwan Siwakul, a famous chemistry tutor) would be useful to students in rural areas.

This idea reflects his government's plan to use technology to improve rural children's access to quality education. Prayut also said he was interested in promoting life-long education.

Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yutthawong backed Prayut's remarks on education policy, noting that the government had an educational "superboard" that focused on student centred teaching, life-long education and students' academic success and employability.

"We are focusing on the education of teenage mothers and the elderly, because these groups are the most problematic, and we have to prepare our country for the upcoming ageing society," Yongyuth said.

"As for employability, we have a bilateral system for high-school students. They will have an opportunity to train in the business [they intend to get jobs in] alongside their studies in school. About 8,000 businesses have joined the project," he said.

He also said that to improve the healthcare system, an organisation to oversee the National Health Security Fund, the Social Security Fund and the Government Officers Welfare Fund would be set up. The organisation will have the duty of taking care of these three funds to work together properly and to same standards.

Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan, meanwhile, said the government had tackled land disputes by granting 7,200 rai (1,150 hectares) of land in forest areas to 1,200 families in Chiang Mai and allocating 105,000 plots to farmers. He also said the government had successfully tackled the illegal trade of wild-animal products and problems related to wildfires and haze.

On this matter, Prayut said people who were allowed to use forestland had to take care of the forest and warned against more encroachment.

Commenting on labour issues, Prawit said the government had sent three reports to the US State Department to use when updating its Trafficking in Persons report, and the feedback was good. The government has also been complying with the European Union's rules against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing to ensure that Thailand's exports of seafood products to the EU are not banned.

PM's Office Minister Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana said 72 laws had been enacted by the junta-appointed National Legislative Assembly, 28 bills were undergoing scrutiny and another 258 were awaiting legislation.

Among the laws Suwaphan said were either essential or useful for Thai society were the anti-human-trafficking law, legislation against loan-sharking and related to debt collection, and laws related to social security, plus civil liability for causing petrol-related pollution, consumer protection from harmful cosmetics, public gatherings, building regulations and employee provident funds.

Despite "good intent", Surapong Kongchantuk, from the Lawyers Council, said he thought the regime was tackling forced labour wrongly. "The government should rather focus on destroying human smuggling, which is the origin of the problem."

In this instance I will have to agree with Mr. P. My wife who holds a masters degree on accounting can't add or multiply figures in her head just as he said. It's a constant tease for me with her and a constant reminder that graduating does not mean educated.

My wife's bachelor's was economics and her Master's education. And she can't do mental arithmetic either - and yep, I constantly tease her too.

Yet, she insists our children learn their tables and practice arithmetic as well as mathematics. Things she, and most Thais I know, can't seem to grasp or really be bothered with.

"achievements on the social front over the past six months"

- Closing down broadcast stations for controversal opinions and unapproved NCPO topics

- Firing of tv moderator for asking questions that create "conflict"

- Threaten news media with execution for not making happiness news

- Impose censorship on news media

- Prevent academic lectures and seminars on unapproved NCPO topics

- Impose Article 44 to curb Thais of their rights & liberties

- Use of cyber laws to obstruct freedom of speech in social media

There is only one kind of government that would see these actions as "achievements." And it's not a democractically elected government but another that starts with D.

And what exactly did the last "democratically" elected government achieve in it's first six months, 12 months, 2 years, in office?

I do remember their placed senior policeman in charge of cyber police warning anyone who dared to even click like on a comment criticizing PTP or their cronies would be hunted down and prosecuted let alone those traitors who dared write such things.

Or the scandal of foreign aid sent to help in the flooding being pilfered and sold at high prices by PTP workers - all hushed up of course.

Or a cartoonist being sued for defamation and hounded and threatened by Tharit

Or the Four Season's secret meeting and the lies told denying it; and the murder of the only witness speaking out, which was solved instantly by Chalerm, almost before it happened - "it was the driver".

Or Yingluck running up more air miles than any previous leader, attending parliament far less than any previous leader, and lying whenever it suited her.

Or the initiating of the infamous rice pledging scheme, the launching of the "give us 2.2 trillion and just trust us with it" get rich club, and first machinations on how to give Thaksin a whitewash of his crimes, outstanding charges and anything that might crawl out the woodwork in the future.

The biggest success of course was the issuing of an illegal replacement passport, at a time when the country was devastated by the worst floods in living memory, which required special opening of the Foreign Ministry passport office, for a convicted criminal fugitive; and then hand delivery of the passport by the Foreign Minister himself, all at tax payers expense; and refusing to answer any questions the Ombudsman kept asking. They have still not answered the question almost 4 years later. What a success!

Any more successes you care to add?

Alll done with maximum transparency as promised, just don't ask how the members of the NCPO amassed their personal wealth.

Nobody can do mental arithmetic in Thailand... apart from assorted falangs & aliens of course... If suddenly all the pocket calculators stopped working here the country would grind to a halt, no Thai can be bothered to learn this, too boring.....

'...but,but,but....Thaksin" again?

How original!

Funny, but I don;t remember any of the recent "democratic" "elected" "governments" going on TV daily, bragging about things they've (not) achieved!

Im not convinced that this is uniquely Thai! The "younger generation" in the UK are just as dependent on calculators.

How is incompetence of past governments any justification for incompetence of current governments? If you overthrow a government by force, based on being the "good" ones, doesn't that hold you to just a slightly higher standard? So far, the junta has not even come close to even a slightly higher standard.

It's almost as if the justification for the coup was really just a smokescreen for a different motive...

Counting in your head is just about as outdated as using one of these:

Baerboxer. This article is not about what the last government did or didn't achieve. It's about the current government. People like you are a joke. In 10 years will still still be stating what the Yingluck or Taksin governments didn't achieve.

Thanks for the off topic, now answer the actual point if you're capable of it.
