Reconciliation meeting kicks off at Army Club



BANGKOK: -- The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) today hosted a reconciliation meeting at the Army Club which saw core members of the Pheu Thai, Democrat parties, leading academics, and students activists attending.

The meeting, aimed at fostering reconciliation process, was organised by the NCPO’s Reconcilation Centre for Reform headed by Gen Chatchalerm Chalermsook, also deputy secretary-general of the NCPO and secretary-general of the Internal Security Operations Command.

Politicians attending included Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, Chamni Sakdiseth, and leading members of the Pheu Thai party Pongthep Thepkanchana, Chaturon Chaisaeng, Phumtham Vechayachai, Worawat Eua-apinyakul, Worachai Hema, Amnuay Khlangpha and Anusorn Iamsa-ard,

Key members of the redshirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship who showed up included its chairman Jatuporn Prompan, Tida Thawornseth and Nattawut Saikuar.

Academics attending included National Reform Council member Chirmsak Pinthong, economic lecturer at Thammasat university Pichit Likitkijsomboon, and student activists such as Sirawit Serithiwat and Natcha Kong-udom.

The reconciliation meeting was a closed door session with no media representatives permitted to attend.

Hopefully, later, there will be some summary of what transpired, what was discussed, the comments made by the various 'factions'. And hopefully, later, there will be a summation of:

- Why each faction supports some form of reconciliation is needed.

- What each 'faction' expects from reconciliation, what their objectives are.

- What each 'faction' is suggesting as a reconciliation process & what actions to take.

I wonder what 'guidance' was given beforehand.

There is something surreal about the military coup leaders holding a reconcliation meeting with civilans on a military base, especially after Prayut has invoked Article 44 to rob Thais of their rights & liberties.

"Ya all come down, you hear. Let's all be friendly like one happy family."

And maybe I won't execute you - just joking!
