Why does Thailand need any military at all? It's not as though any of its neighbors have been threatening an invasion in the last 150 years.

The military is apparently needed to stage coups, as historically they have

done little in the way of fighting. ( well except against civilians ...) . No one

has ever used the term battle hardened and Thai military in the same sentence.

It is all a bit moot however, as Thailand signed the Treaty of Amity in the 50s whereas

if Thailand is attacked, America will come in and defend them. So instead

of wasting billions of baht on useless submarines how about helping out

some poor farmers ??

the chinese have these plans for a new type of sub, one with wheels on the bottom. it would glide thru the water as all subs do, but it can also move along the ocean bottom in a stealth mode. this would ideal for following the "new" slave trade or rolling right up on shore and putting the fear of god in the protesters in the next coup . something the sub board should look into :-)

Since the Manhattan Rebellion, a failed (counter-) coup in 1951 staged by members of the Royal Thai Navy (I think some might even have been sub-mariners), the RTN has been on the outs.

This also could be one reason, along with the lack of a mission and shallow waters in the Gulf of Thailand, why the King has voiced negative opinions about the need for submarines.

I seriously doubt they'll ever get any subs.

If and when they get these submarines just think of all the amusement it will bring to TV...we all know it's not going to end well and I predict a major issue with the subs in the first 9 months...hope it won't involve loss of life but I wouldn't be surprised..Submarines are complicated bits of kit and training and maintenance of said vessels is not easy..a accident waiting to happen..
