Win 8.1 Optional Update KB3022345 Fails to Install--A Fix

Windows released a truckload of Optional Updates this week...around 34 updates/patches. I know for my Win 8.1 computer identified 21 Optional Updates....all installed except the one numbered KB3022345...and I tried multiple times over yesterday and this morning...each and every time it would fail to install.

From googling the failure a lot of other people are having the same problem...the update seems to install fine on some Win 8.1 computers and not on others. See a summary of the problem as this Link.

Anyway, a few minutes ago while continuing to google the problem I stumbled upon the fix...or at least it worked on others' computers (at the time at least 3 others said it worked for them) and it also worked on mine just a few minutes ago. Link

See below snapshot of the fix. As FYI the one update you temporarily "uninstall" is classified as an Important Update. Anyway, I "almost" followed the instructions below by uninstalling the one update without restarting my computer, I immediately did a Check Updates and Windows now come back saying I had the one Important Update (the one I just unistalled) and the one Optional Update which was failing to install. I checked the block to install the Optional Update but forgot to uncheck the block to install the Important Update like the instructions below state/imply. So, both the Important Update and Optional Update started their install and both installed....yeeeaaaaa!...I finally got KB3022345 to install....I then restarted my computer and all updates are now happily installed.

So, hopefully below instructions will work for you whether you follow them exactly, or just uninstall the one Important Update and then immediately reinstall it along with the KB3022345 Optional Update at the same time. I expect Microsoft will fix this issue with another update pretty soon but if you want to fix it now, hopefully this fix will work for you as it did for me and others.

Haha. good thread biggrin.png

You have to uninstall KB3045999 to get KB3022345 installed.

I spent some time to find out why I can't install KB3045999 cheesy.gif

Fails with an obscure error code 80070490.

I didn't get it fixed, tried multiple tipps from the net,

Have it hidden for now.

This KB3045999 must be another masterpiece from the patch lab.

Couple of warnings in the net not to install KB3045999.

I have Windows 7 BTW.

What's strange is when you go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base talking KB3022345 it says the "perquisites" to install it is you must have KB2919355 and KB3045999 already installed (which were on my computer). See below snapshot for the MS Knowledge Base. But a fix someone in the MS community figured out is to "uninstall KB3045999 (one of the perquisites), then install KB3022345 (the one that's failing to install), and then reinstall KB3045999.

Last night when I was researching this problem, I almost uninstalled those two perquisite updates and then try reinstalling KB3022345, KB2919355, and KB3045999, but I decided against it...I figured it wouldn't work....plus I was ready to go to bed....my belly was full of Chang beer. But basically that is what the fix does in way by temporarily uninstalling one of the perquisite updates.

I expect the official Microsoft fix, when and if it comes out, may fix the issue a different way or actually do the same thing but in a disguised way. Oh well, I'm not concerned about it anymore as I got subject KB installed. That's the first time for quite a few years I been unable to get an Optional Update to install on one of my various computers....and I had tried 12 times last night and this morning from reviewing my update history. Now, I've had some updates that failed to install initially, but try a few more times over the coming minutes and then they magically install.

A few minutes ago when doing a Windows Check for Updates it came back with two optional updates....as normal I selected both for install and tried to install them...one failed. I looked closer and saw it was the KB3022345 again that failed to install.

What's strange I had got it to successfully install back on 24 Apr using the method in Post #1. I reconfirmed a Successful install by looking at my Updates History...yeap, there KB3022345 was...successfully installed on 24 Apr. I tried to reinstall it the normal way by just trying again...the install failed again. I thought to myself maybe its failing because it already installed, but why is the Check for Updates identifying it as an Optional Install as if it's not installed?

So, I repeated my method identified in Post #1 by first uninstalling KB3045999 which was an Important vs Optional Update...it uninstalled OK. I then ran another Check for Updates and it came back with the need to install the Important KB3045999 and the Optional KB3022345. I selected the Optional KB-345 to be installed and left the Important KB-999 checked to also be installed. I clicked install the two updates and both successfully installed. I ran check for udpates again and it came back saying no updates....once again I'm good to go.

Below snapshot shows the first KB345 install failure today and the other optional KB that installed....then you see me trying just to install KB345 by itself a few times...both times failed. I then uninstalled KB999 followed by reinstalling KB499 and KB345 at the same time---success.

Just FYI if KB3022345 is causing install grief for you as it has been for many others.
