PATTAYA: -- On Thursday Police received a report from a Burmese Woman that her Burmese boyfriend was being kept, against-his-will, on a Thai fishing boat in Pattaya Bay.

A joint operation took place, involving the Royal Thai Navy and Chonburi Immigration to intercept the boat and escort it back to the Bali Hai Port.

The Captain of the boat is Khun Paiboon aged 59 and confirmed that apart from him, 1 Thai National and 9 Burmese Nationals were working on his boat. He also claimed that the foreign fishermen were working legally and had the correct work visas, despite the fact he was unable to produce any documentation to back up his claims.

Aside from the terrible cruelty of slavery, that this farcical investigation does nothing to address.

I don't understand why Thai officialdom makes such a fuss about protecting Thai jobs from foreign workers when the place is full of them.

i have not seen nor heard of a thai boss giving a 15,000 baht advance to a hired laborer. did he do the same with all the foreign labor? maybe this is a family relative. we will probably never hear the ''rest of the story''

Wow... a years salary. And a third of that spent on a cell phone.

Too sad.

Phyco, the pleps in Australia have great political clout, the plebs in Thailand have little or no voice now, if in fact they ever did.

you are wrong....it's all about human traffiking. Same what UN blamed them for. Or even EU with a possible ban cocerning fish products...

This seems to be the type of story that is really a government press release.

See! We are fixing the problem--we pulled over one boat!

And, well, no one was arrested of course....

Spot on I reckon. Yep, this is action. Thai style. "That should convince 'em. After all, those Euros are pretty dumb. . . . "

true, but even an unelected government doesnt want the masses getting too restless, and being able to blame someone else for your own problems is a great stress relief even if it makes no difference in reality

If there was no paper work to prove it, i would seize the boat and investigate the claims of every one on board

From the source article: Police are unsure if the complaint is genuine at this stage of the investigation and decided to seize the boat and detain everyone pending further checks.
