May 3, 201511 yr The two wildlife sounds that have been dominating my life recently in Rawai, apart from the ever-present crows which I find hauntingly nostalgic, have been the very much not haunting frog/toad with the call like a fog horn / dying cow and the amazing insects with the loudest sizzzing sound I've ever heard: like starlings in a flock which follow each other everywhere in the sky, these beetles or whatever they are all seem to follow each other in their calls, starting and finishing simultaneously. I love 'em! By chance, I caught one of the frogs/toads the other night when it got trapped in my pool. They look like this: I think he's a toad, isn't he? He's approximately 7cm long. He's definitely the culprit as he was making the noise while trapped in my pool. Now that I've nailed the toad, please can someone tell me what the insects are? Are they perhaps the 12cm beetle of which I have many fine, dead specimens in my pool? Please help!
May 3, 201511 yr Its `Kaloula pulchra, banded Malaysia toad and the insects would be Cicadas, they make a terrible noise, like a high pitched chain saw. regards worgeordie
May 3, 201511 yr Author Worgeordie, tonight you are the man!! So these are cicadas. They are amazingly loud. In South Africa where we've just moved from, we had crickets: I couldn't hear them cos I'm a bit deaf, but these bad boys here are loud enough for me! Thanks very much!

I have found extremely loud frogs. Unbelievably loud, like a chainsaw. The sound came from 50 meters or more. i tracked him down to sitting on the edge of an open water trough. Not toads though. This frog was beyond belief.
