Hello guys,

Quick question:

My 90 days ED visa ends on the 13th of May. I am planning on going to Vientiane to get a double entry TR visa.

My ED visa is stamped with 13th of May as final date, can I leave for Vientiane on the 13th itself and apply for a TR visa on the same day? Returning to Thailand on the 14th?

In any case do I need to cancel my ED visa or something similar? (I have read some threads about this, want to make sure)

Many thanks for your replies!

First is necessary to determine exactly what is in the passport !

1. Have you a currently valid VISA obtained from a Thai Embassy/Consulate ?

OR

2. Do you have an "extension of stay" (NOT a visa ! ) obtained from a Thai immigration office ?

1. Currently I have a valid visa obtained from the Thai Consulate in Amsterdam.

It is a single entry visa valid for 90 days.

Since not on an extension no need to cancel.

Thanks!

Can I leave Thailand on the day my ED visa expires and then apply for a double entry TR visa in Vientiane the same day?

Then just leave anytime you like! smile.png

It will take at least 2 days to obtain new visa . Apply Day1 collect passport/visa on Day 2

More important would be your permission to stay stamped into your passport. As said, if you're here on a visa entry, you can just leave, but the date by which you must leave is determined by the stamp given to you by immigrations not the expiration date printed on the visa sticker.

Most people confuse ED visa and ED visa extension.

You seem new.

If you are on an extension like 99¨% of ED visa, you will have problems.

What are the problems? My ED visa was issued in June 2012 and I have been issued extensions of stay since then. I am at the end of my study now and was planning to go to Vientiane for a double entry tourist visa.

Would this creat an issue?

If you are on an extension you will need a letter from your school stating your studies have ended on or after the date you leave the country.

Nong Khai immigration will not let you leave the country without the letter. They are the only ones doing that out of all border crossings and airports.

Thanks Joe

So basically I need a letter stating that my study did not finish before the extension of stay date stamped in my passport?

Need to state that you study finished the day you leave country. That may be enough, or the border post can send you to the local immigration office to cancel the extension, assuming it's open at that time. Alternatively you can cancel at your local office and pay Bt 1,900 for a 7 days extension, giving you more flexibility to travel.

I know repeating for the 100000 th time " you are not on an visa but on extension" is very tedious and I admire you for this, but here may I say you need a holiday?

Can I go to my local immigration (Jomtien) and cancel the ED extension then not have to show the letter at the Nongkhai border? This way saving me from going to Nongkhai immigration?

You can go immigration a day or two before the date on your cancellation letter and they will date the cancellation equal to the date on the letter. If you go on the date of cancellation you have to leave on the same day it is done.
