From what I've seen and been told I can't imagine a greater injustice to ones child than sending him/her to school here. So what would you do - send them abroad to a boarding school? Tuition fees for our kids are alright but just a fraction of the real costs. All the different uniforms, shoes, bags, books, mandatory English class, and extra curricular cash demands are raising it by another 200% at least. We just paid 1,000 baht per child to get their names embroidered on the shirts. We can afford it, but I can imagine a lot of parents are struggling with this. That seems a lot - mine were 100 baht per shirt and they have 4 shirts each - so 400 per kid and that is written in Thai and English plus the name of the school. My daughter started at the age of 2.5 years old going to a Private School.. she is now 4.5 and every year you have new uniforms which go up every year.. new bags. Not to mention the fees... which by the time she is 6.5 would be more then the total cost of my University Education. Something is wrong here big time. I am lucky to have my work paying for it.. not sure how I could pay this if not. It would be much cheaper to have her go to a Private Boarding School in my home country, just a comparison. The uniforms are all part of the graft embedded in the education system, the school gets a cut on everything, my kids last school we had to buy certain clothing items from the school, they were not available else where, all the good schools you have to pay a bribe just to get kids enrolled, amazing Thailand. I could easily pay this from my pensions on a monthly basis. But since they want the whole annual fee in advance and no credit at all, the girl cannot go to college. I've got all kinds of claims and properties in Germany, but ever since I'm in Thailand I'm a nobody for them. And everybody in Germany is afraid to be beaten up or killed by nobody Eh?? I totally forgot about that. Kickbacks to get the kids into good schools. There are a few expat parents with kids from my office and our company each year pays/donates to an already very well off school in Bangkok. This ensures our kids can go to this school. The CEO from my company has his son who started school 3 years ago.. All of a sudden the school my company uses for expats changed to one of the best in BKK.. amazing how things work here. We can afford it, but I can imagine a lot of parents are struggling with this. really 1K per shirt?, okay im starting an embroidery business next end of school year tho im betting there is one shop for each school that handles them all, most possibly owned by the directors sister and staffed by khmer. He said 1k per kid not per shirt. 1k per kid is still quite a lot though. I think mine was 50 baht per shirt for 5 shirts. 25% of what he paid. Every kid grows bigger after a year.One cost they could cut is the stupid need for a "uniform"Its seems making them all look cute and pretty for school is more important than any learning. Uniforms dont make you any better Tell the teachers the same. Why do uniforms of teachers look so militaristic? You really have to ask that question about Thailand ? Not only do they make you pay to have your child's name embroidered on their uniforms, this is also a cunning ploy to stop you handing down the uniforms to your younger children, instead forcing you to buy new each time to further line their pockets, Thai education is all about the educators making money & the child's education comes in at a distant second place to that. Food for starting up a food shop, rent for the shop is already paid. The money is there, it's just in the wrong place (Europe) and it takes some time to get it out legally. If I wait too long, then my investments will be lissed against the wind, my gf will have to work in a bar again, and maybe her daughter, too. Anyone that trusts us and gives us credit? Were I a parent with kids in Thai school, this would be at the top of my rage list.Sending your child to a Thai or bilingual school is condemning them. Even at the better ones, they have to follow the archaic Thai MOE curriculum and the foreigners employed are not much better than your average backpacker/sex tourist. Do all in your powers to send them to a reputable international school.I teach in a regular Thai school. I very much resent being labeled a sex tourist because I do. I, and many others, teach in these schools because we find it rewarding, challenging, and it allows us to earn a living here in a respectable profession. In order to do so we have had to get the qualifications demanded by the system. The days of walking into a job as a teacher because you have a white face and speak English are gone, rightly so.You may have the money to splash out on an international school. Good for you. Your comment on teachers being little better than sex tourists or back packers reveals an ignorance and bigotry which points to something of a weakness in your own education.
