Jump in crime reports to police
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- There has been a rise in crime in Thailand in recent years and more repeat offenders being caught, a spokesman from the Justice Ministry's Office of Justice Affairs said yesterday.

In 2013, there were more than 900,000 complaints to police compared to 802,700 the year before, and 700,000 people convicted, Chawanas Janekarn said.

Research showed that in 2013, 36 per cent of adult convicts and 41.5 per cent of young offenders repeated crimes, he said, adding authorities are currently considering if certain violators can be pardoned in order to cope with the overcrowding of prisons. Those being considered for pardon include up to 30,000 men failing to report for mandatory military service.

Noted forensic scientist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand, director of ministry's Central Institute of Forensic Science, said a better DNA-based identification system was necessary for underprivileged and marginalised people, as it would help protect them from exploitation and trafficking. She spoke at the same press conference.

Of course you have Repeat Offenders , When you have 500 baht Fines...

I would guess that reports to police are up because many now think police will actually be forced to do their jobs? Give it time, reality will set in, and then officials can boast of decline in reports....

There has been a rise in crime in Thailand in recent years and more repeat offenders being caught, a spokesman from the Justice Ministry's Office of Justice Affairs said yesterday.

How much of that crime is perpetrated by crime prevention officers (aka RTP)?

Muderers, rapists, drug dealers and bus drivers all out on bail , life goes on for them in the outside world. Just maybe an island down south somewhere could be turned into another Al Catraz. If lawbreakers are locked up no more repeat crimes ...or is that stating the bleedin' obvious ?

I did read somewhere in this forum about a learned judge recommending the use of suspended jail sentences rather than sentencing offenders to jail.

Expect to see the crime rate shooting up even more should this become reality.

If the Justice Ministry did it's job properly , there would be a lot of lawyers among those convicted!

ONLY IN THAILAND can a lawyer struck off over 20 years ago, continue to run a busy law office. He even has the neck to appear in Court, using his junior lawyers as a front, and controling them.

That is why I have asked if the justice system is in line with global standards...

"...a better DNA-based identification system was necessary for underprivileged and marginalised people, as it would help protect them from exploitation and trafficking."

How many people believe taking DNA from exploited and/or marginalized people would be done for their "protection?"
