Dive School Recommendation in Krabi

Recommended Posts

Can anybody recommend a good dive school in Krabi. I would like to put my 11 year old son through the PADI open water course.

I am looking for a school with a good boat and instuctors and a decent pool for the confined water sessions. Safety also being a top priority.

Many thanks in advance.

Ulf and MB at Lanta Diver. If Lanta location akward they can point you in the right direction for greater Krabi operations.

Thanks for getting back to me. Lanta Diver looks good. I will be staying in Krabi so I was hoping for reccomendations there please.

Go to Kon-Tiki Krabi (I guess you will stay in Ao Nang). They have years of experience dealing with children who wants to become divers. What's important is, that your son have a great time with a experience instructor and his course will be done in his own pace. Kon-Tiki also have some great facilities and run their own two dive boats to Ao Nang Islands and Phi Phi Islands.

The course at Kon-Tiki will take 4 days to complete and should not be any shorter than this. You can send them an email at [email protected]

If you need more help please let me know.

Many thanks for the recommendations. I am out of touch with PADI and was surprised to see you can do the classroom sessions online. Would anybody recommend this route? Kon Tiki looks like a good option. My intention would be to hire some equipment and tag along. I am not sure if I can find my old certs though, it has been a while. Do Kon Tiki use a pool for the confined water sessions? Also how long is a typical day on the course... pool, classroom and open water?

Due to international Internet laws regarding communicating with a minor, the minimum age for participating in PADI eLearning is 13 years old..

Your son has to do a traditional course with the dive center you choose. Kon-Tiki only use pool for confined water training. Typical a schedule is like this:

Day 1 - Theory + pool training

Day 2 - Theory + pool training

Day 3 - 2 open water dives

Day 4 - 2 open water dives

Basically, there is nothing against you joining in on the course, but I don't recommend it. (The instructor needs the full attention of the kid). I do recommend, that you join the same dive trip/same boat as your son, when he is doing his open water training dives.

Also, I don't recommed any parent/s to join on the actual training dives for your kid/s. Join another group of divers or go snorkeling and enjoy the moments between the dives and after.

I guess the purpose is, that you and your son are able to go diving together. You will have plenty of time for that in the future. Leave the training as a scuba diver to the instructor and let them have the chance of getting your son's full atttention while on training.

For you: Inform the dive center to check your certification. They need your full name as it is written on your certification card and your birthday. The name has to be 100% correct so if you'd use a middle name, changed your family name or have an initial, they need to know it.

Be aware that if you haven't been diving for more than 1 year, you will be asked to do a refresher course. This can be done in the pool or in open water.

Very helpful, many thanks.

Any idea how long it takes to get to the dive sites?

How long is a typical day on the course?

Which of the 2 Kon Tiki boats are normally used? I note they have a large and a small boat.

If you go diving around Ao Nang Islands the trip from shore to the dive sites is typical 30 - 45 min. For a trip to Phi Phi Islands it will be around 2h15min. Kon-Tiki normally use the small boat for Ao Nang Islands and the big for Phi Phi Islands.

How long is a typical day on the course?

The first two days you start around 9am (your son will be picked up at your hotel/guest house by a driver from Kon-Tiki) and normally finish around mid to late afternoon. The schedule for the actual training dives depends on the location. Kon-Tiki can answer and guide you on this.

Which of the 2 Kon Tiki boats are normally used? I note they have a large and a small boat.

The small is only used for Ao Nang Islands. The big is used for Phi Phi Islands but sometimes for Ao Nang Islands as well. Both boats are operated by highly respected captain who has been with them for many years.
