BANGKOK — A former Yellowshirt protester was sentenced to three years and four months in prison today for attempting to run over a group of police officers in 2008.

Thailand’s Supreme Court upheld a guilty verdict for 57-year-old Preecha Treecharoon, who injured five policemen when he crashed into them with his pickup truck on 7 Oct 2008, but reduced his sentence from 34 years in prison to three.

The court said the lighter sentence was delivered because Preecha was "acting out of momentary rage" at police officers who were unlawfully taunting protesters.

"When police officers cracked down on rallies of the People's Alliance for Democracy, some police officers taunted the demonstrators, which was unlawful and an abuse of power," the verdict read. "Mr. Preecha was also severely injured [in the clashes], having lost his right eye … Therefore, it led his outburst of momentary rage and wrongdoing against the five victims."

The judge also found Preecha guilty of assembly for unlawful purposes because some of the protesters were armed at the time.

No, you will get a good and proper shake down.

If in doubt, examine your passport and examine what makes you different to these perps. ;)

Momentary rage so he got his sentenced reduced by 90%. Now I wonder if the judiciary, Elites selected, will use the same criteria for Red-shirts ? I am afraid that is this type of 1 sided treatment that rather then reconciliation it will drive the wedge deeper.

The difference is that he was charged with attempted murder.

You want equal treatment for red shirts? Note that he was also found "guilty of assembly for unlawful purposes because some of the protesters were armed at the time." Bang goes the claim that the reds were innocent "peaceful protesters", they were guilty of the same crime he was convicted of.

Yellow shirt protester sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for crashing truck at police in 2008

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court today reversed the life imprisonment sentence handed down by the Appeals Court on a yellow shirt anti government protester for crashing his vehicle into a group of anti-riot police in 2008.

The highest court instead sentenced him to four years in prison but commuted to two years and eight months for the offence.

The yellow shirt protester Preecha Tricharoon was escorted by the corrections officials to hear the ruling of the Supreme Court at the Criminal Court this morning after he appealed the life sentence to the highest court.

Preecha was arrested in October 7, 2008 after he rammed his pickup truck into a group of anti riot police during the anti government rally called by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) to protest the Somchai Wongsawat government in front of the Parliament. Five officers were injured in the incident.

The Criminal Court or the first court sentenced him to three years in prison but suspended the prison term to two years instead after considering that it was his first criminal offence and he was blinded on one eye from injuries suffered during the dispersal of the protest rally by police.

But the ruling was appealed by the state prosecutor to the Appeals Court which overruled the first court’s suspension sentence and replaced with life imprisonment.

However the Appeals Court commuted the life sentence by one third to 33 years and 12 months after considering his testimonies were useful to the case.

Today the highest court reversed the lower court’s life sentence reasoning that since Mr Preecha joined the rally which some rallyist were armed, he was then guilty of illegal assembly of more than 10 persons.

The highest court also said as the anti riot police were moving in to disperse the PAD protesters, some police officers also showed provocative acts to enrage protesters which the court said this was an act of power abuse.

It said that since the convicted was also injured and had his right eye blinded, it was justified for him to get angry and committed the crime.

The highest court disagreed with the Appeals Court’s ruling and reversed the sentence to four years in prison for the offence. But it commuted by one third to two years and eight months, and added eight more months for illegal assembly.

In total he will serve two years and eight months for ramming his vehicle into the police that injured five officers, plus eight more months for illegal assembly.

Headline should read..."Thai Courts Endorse 'An Eye For An Eye' Vigilante Justice".

Jesus wept. You could not make this stuff up.

you missed the point, by a mile.

The Thai Judiciary should have been one of the first reformations to have been carried out, and yet there we have it, an excuse to have a "momentary lapse of rage" gets you a 90% reduction of the crime of attempted murder.

and yet the girl driving underage manages to actually kill nine people and gets probation? (which she complained about)

Yep. And the Red Bull boy walks around free; the actor who shot is mate, denied it then confessed when the cctv footage was shown and became all full of sorrow seems to have been forgotten; all those thieving billions, trafficking etc etc.

Now for the heinous crime of picking some wild mushrooms because you are old and poor............... 15 years.

Slam your truck in an attempt to kill, maim and injures multiple police officers trying to do their job - and get your sentence reduced by 90% because you were enraged.

So you think 34 years is a fair sentence for attempted murder? Or given the circumstances, is 40 months more realistic?

Yes totally repulsive.. the guy should stay in jail longer.. not 34 years (bit crazy) but 3 years for running in and trying to kill the police. Justice here is crazy and I don't care he is a yellowshirt.. violent people are people we dont need on both sides.

Had it been that he drove his truck into a single Police officer, then yes I would agree with you, but his intent was to kill as many as he could, by driving into a group of them, so yes, 34 years for the attempted murder in which 5 officers were injured would sound pretty reasonable, that works out at an average of 7 years for each person injured, pretty realistic for the charge would you not agree?

Do you think sentencing a 70 year old woman for 15 years for LM (115) by a military court is any less realistic?

Counter one ridiculous sentence with another? No thank you.

5 officers were injured in ONE incident. You don't sentence somebody to 5 consecutive sentences for one incident, at worst if separate sentences were given, they would run concurrently.

Six years per attempted murder (x5 victims) = fair.

In America he would have just been shot dead on the spot.

you're a funny guy, have you looked at your own ridiculous sentences? Have you forgotten that this is Thailand and they don't quite do things the way the West does ?

I think the wedge hit the bottom when the red-shirts cheered on hearing the news one of their terrorist brothers fired a grenade and killed some children in Trang.

And nobody got arrested for this or any of the other murders by UDD scumbags for a few thousand baht under the orders of Pheu-Thai.

It's time you people were held accountable for all the murders and terrorist attacks you did against civilians. Reconciliation can wait as far as I'm concerned : you've already shown that you don't want it.

Wrong!! there was an arrest made for the child killing grenade attacks, there was even the normal showpiece Thai reconstruction of it too.

Have you actually seen the written orders from the PTP, to carry out those attacks, or are you just wishful thinking? I'd love to see the evidence that implicates the PTP in ordering those attacks, can you post a copy please? Not hearsay, but evidence that would stand up in court, very much appreciated, thanks.

You people? you mean the voting red shirts who have more of a say than you? As far as they're concerned, the sooner you stop trying to tell them how to run their lives the better.

I suppose that you consider the popcorn gunman a hero too?

There is NO excuse for violence whatsoever, but get off your high horse, England and the UK and the world overall is full of a-holes who are every bit as bad as the UDD, the riots in London the past few years, when throbbers were throwing fire extinguishers off the roof were not doing it to put out fires were they?

You are familiar about people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones?

Nothing is ever going to change unless both sides desire unity and peace, and the electorate are treated as voting equals, the chances of that are nil. as you have the likes of you and your bigoted attitudes towards a particular area of the country.

perhaps the old and poor that got 15 years should have said they were enraged, not hungry... I wonder if the judgethinks that the 15 year custodial sentence was in line with international standards? Sometimes BB, I get enraged just thinking about those poor people. Their whole lives <deleted> because they were hungry just isn't right. <sigh>
