Quality = how much money you spend.

Only in Thailand.

Wrong !

Again.

Think of any casino, anywhere in the world. You will find their "quality" punters are determined by the money they spend, not by their table manners or the way they dress.

I am sure there are many more examples out there, perhaps you might try to think of some. biggrin.png

"The minister said people in the North of Thailand have already changed their attitude towards Chinese tourists because they like to shop."

That's 100% pure Thainess for you, as long as you got the $, no worries, you can crap and spit where ever you want.

Guess no surprise that tourism minister's definition of 'quality' tourist is how much they spend.

I would imagine that every Tourism Minister in the world would define a "quality tourist" as one that spends money. How would you do it? Height, weight, smile?

Well, let's see. How about:

* Is respectful of local customs & traditions

* Treats local citizens & fellow travelers with courtesy & civility

* Doesn't disrupt public transportation

* Demonstrates a reasonable knowledge & practice of simple personal hygeine

* Waits their turn

* Respects religious places & prohibitions

* Understands "inside voice" ... (as most 4yo children from other countries do)

I won't go into the personal spending thing; sheer lunacy.

Well, I know many business operators of guest houses, and restaurants, and many staff at supermarkets, and quite frankly they have had a gutful of the Chinese tourists, one said to me...." We will not survive much more of these people "......

See how they treat the vendors in the markets....not nice....one staff member at a store selling textiles and ceramics told me he had to leave as he could just no longer take the attitude of the Chinese, from what I can see and the people I talk to it is true the people of the north have made up their mind....they do not like them at all, quality tourist I think not, some will be good but large groups just leave behind one hell of a mess, make a lot of noise and are rude to the extreme....witness the quality when they are in a 7 eleven.....the staff cringe.......but let's be honest, in a vacuum any kind of tourist is a godsend.

Huh?? Johnny Depp?? What the heck are you drinking there???!!! If you're by any chance referring to his dogs & the Australian thing, you can remove your Size 16s from your mouth now - I'm one of his biggest critics over that and am on record heartily endorsing any treatment Australian LE saw fit to meat out! And that had absolutely nothing to do with his American citizenship.

I find it hard to believe the average Chinese tourist spends more than an Aussie tourist.

An Aussie would spill more than a Chinese tourist spent on an average day. biggrin.png

Right you are. Just ask the bar girls on Walking Street, Patpong, etc.

I was implying in a sarcastic way that the Chinese were more high class than Mr. Depp.

Could they somehow get these figures from electronically processing information from ATM withdrawals and come up with an average daily amount spent depending on total amount withdrawn, length of stay, from which bank in which country the money was withdrawn ? I don't know if this is even possible but who knows

Have you ever seen a Chinese tourist use an ATM machine?... coffee1.gif

These people In the tourism ministry are complete fools. It is next to if not impossible to determine what the median daily spending of tourists from various countries spend. This guy should get his head out of his ass.

This year has been the first year to see a real onslaught from the Chinese in Chiang Mai.

Wait until it starts getting cold in China and see what the next high season brings.

IMO they will be coming in droves and there will be many changes to accommodate them.

Maybe a change is what's needed and we need people to ride our new bus routes anyway.wink.png

In that case, my apologies. I found Depp's arrogance, borne of his wealth & celebrity, insufferable. But it was the wealth & celebrity in play there, not his happening to be an American. NOT the case with the chinese. I actually see the same mentality at work in their squatting of the East & South China Seas. If no one stands up to them, it'll continue & just become more antagonistic.

Impossible to know how much a tourist spends. The only time I see Chinese spending anything is at the food court at Tesco as the food is so cheap it's almost free. Or at Ko Larn when we witnessed them trying to barter beach chair fees to 20 baht instead of paying the 100.

This article is ridiculous and they must of sample department store purchases of hand bags and extrapolated.

Yes, absolutely correct.

The article even doesn't mention Russian tourists.

However it is a well known fact that Russian tourists are spending more money in Thailand than any other country tourists.

But this doesn't have anything to do with the concept of the so called "quality tourist".

Jim, a 63 year old American with his 22 year old bride----the very best of luck to them.

Is it just all about money----I hear the farang posters say about the Chinese visitors ------well the Thailand government should be well ashamed of themselves putting money first..........oh the irony of living in Thailand .......coffee1.gif

Yes evidently the bad behaviour of some in and around some of Chiang Mai's temples doesn't seem to matter then? Thainesstongue.png

What is it that makes people so uptight about these facts ? --and they are facts.

They are the same facts reported by other governments all around the world.

These are the very latest figures just released 15/4/2015---The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) just released new data on tourist spending in 2014. Last year international tourism generated over $1,245 billion around the world. Tourism is obviously a huge moneymaker for countries that are top travel destinations, but some tourists spend more than others.

Unsurprisingly, Chinese people spent the most when traveling abroad, spending a total of $165 billion in 2014....1/

Unsurprisingly it would seem to everyone but the farang bar experts who see it all as a great plot by Thailand Gov-- but their not going to be fooled by it all----they haven't seen one Chinese guy buy a bar girl a house---so how can it be correct. I guess the United nations are also in on this plot.........coffee1.gif

I think you should realise that a whole load of people from America and Europe are noticing the changes taking place, and some people feel threatened or uneasy about the new situation !! :)

Consider tourism in places like London and Paris. People who were there do remember that there was practically no Chinese tourists in London and Paris as recently as the early or mid 1990s, today, there's loads. If we look at Pattaya, they were still not that many about ten years ago. It's happened all very quickly, today, there are so many Chinese tourists, they're causing 'people congestion' !

People who are new to Thailand, they do turn up in Pattaya, and they do feel "I never did reckon that I would see so many orientals here". We're living in a rapidly changing world. The number of Chinese who can afford to travel might double in the next seven to ten years.

Yes, feeling threatened and uneasy at what you're looking at. That's why so many people have got to create their own world, their own Thailand. A Thailand were Thais hate Chinese (even though nearly all the Thais who have money actually look the same as the Chinese tourists), where Chinese tourists contribute zero money and are a nuisance. A fantasy world that is not shared by the UNWTO, and not by any serious media either !! :)

The big issue remains that Thailand is not very competitive in the market. It is ranked 35th overall. For quality visitors, they are better served going to developed Asia (e.g. Hong Kong, Singapore, Tawian , South Korea) and Malaysia.

An anonymous Chinese Internet user has escalated tensions between Hong Kong and mainland Chinese citizens by calling on mainland parents to bring their children to Hong Kong and let them "urinate in the streets." This call to action comes after a video of a mainland Chinese toddler relieving herself on a crowded Hong Kong street went viral, creating a surprising uproar in both Hong Kong and mainland China.

I saw a couple of quality tourist punching on at swampy a couple of weeks ago.

Standard issue tour group...not sure who started what but saw the bloke punch a lady...who immediately gave him a couple of solid ones back.

Followed by the shouting and shoving etc of the rest of the group.

Give the cops credit though they soon settled them down.

Oh so quality is measured by spending power? !

What about the fact that Chinese tourists are...

Ill mannered, push in front, noisy, pick their nose and are uncouth!

Must have learnt that from the English tourists...pretty good copiers the Chinese.

Well, here is a clear case where quantity equates to quality, even if they do shit in the sink...

Yes, yes, and foreigners who get drunk and start shouting at the staff in the bars, and who piss and vomit onto the pavement whilst walking back to the hotel at two a.m. very drunk, these fahlang tourists are different ??

How much piss and puke (vomit) is on the streets of Pattaya at four o'clock every morning ?

:)

So Quality is only defined by money?

What about the fact that they.....

Will not queue but push to the front, are ill mannered, aggressive, pick their nose, noisy and have no consideration.

Horrible people and the Honk Kong Chinese would agree!

At the end of the day they are better for the economy than penny pinching fat farang pensioners. They come to Thailand, spend money, and leave within 2-3 weeks. This is the sort of crowd Thailand wishes to attract, not farangs who try to put their nose into everything.

I think Turkish tourists spend the most money. Haven't met any turk who spent less than 10k baht a day here. They are hated by other groupers for inflating the prices in go-go bars, they are known to pay mediocre girls 3-4k baht for short time.

Have people seen the British yobs (hooligans) who turn up in places like Spain and Greece ? Come on, some of them are disgusting, their behaviour 'beggars belief' ! And yet, when they do it in Spain and Greece, it's called having a good laugh !! :)

Yes, Chinese in Hong Kong who don't like the Chinese from China !! :)

They should ban or forbid Hong Kong men from taking their mainland Chinese girlfriends/wives back to Hong Kong with them. That will cause the men of Hong Kong to shut up !

People who live in Hong Kong do actually know that loads of men in Hong Kong have girlfriends/wives who they got from China. :)
