BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told diplomats from the United Nations that the country will hold general election in September next year and assured them that the military junta and the government will not interfere with the election.

According to Khaosod, the diplomats from 12 countries in the UN were visiting Thailand as part of the Foreign Ministry’s effort to form a new diplomatic bloc that promotes Thailand’s standing in the international community, said government spokesman Maj Gen Weerachon Sukhonthapatipak yesterday.

They are from Antigua and Barbuda, Burundi, Central African Republic, Comoros, Dominican Republic, Gabon, Ghana, Kiribati, Hungary, Nauru, Vanuatu, and Cameroon.

The spokesman said the prime minister greeted the diplomats and told them about his intention to restore democracy in Thailand, following the coup in May last year.

The prime minister said Thailand is undergoing a period of national reforms, and will hold an election by September 2016, and also said he and the government will not interfere with the election, the spokesman said,

Gen Prayut also insisted on his determination that he does not want to hold on to power, and is not seeking personal gain.

“He is enduring all of this for his country. In the past, various conflicts prevented the country from moving forward, so it was necessary for him to step in and take care of the situation. And he insisted p Thailand is building a sustainable system of democracy,” Maj Gen Weerachon revealed.

The spokesman went on saying that the representatives expressed support for Thailand’s military government.

They spoke with one voice that Thailand is a good place to live, and it is full of friendship,” he said.

They also gave moral support to the government, which has clearly proven to them that it is working to benefit the Thai people and spread happiness.

They unanimously agreed that in order to move the country forward, stability and national security have to come first, then other things will follow, the spokesman added.

At the meeting, Gen Prayut confirmed that the next general election would be held in one year, that laws would be enforced fairly, that authority would not be abused, but that his government had to exercise control actions in some cases to ensure national progress.

Is this the most impressive list of diplomats that the Foreign Ministry could muster for the PM to speak to? I am sure that the fact that these major world powers "spoke with one voice that Thailand is a good place to live, and is full of friendship" will carry a lot of weight back at the U.N.

Isn't that sweet??giggle.gif

Would be nice for a change to hear all the compliments directly from the diplomats involved, instead of from a Thai spokesperson "They said...................."

This like an organized show. None of them in the above list are UN Permanent members. He should invite US, UK, GERMANY, FRANCE, RUSSIA and CHINA for assurance.

This article reeks of sensationalism directed to put P and the junta and Thailand into a good light. Probably dictated to the press by a junta rep.

Although I agreed Thailand needed this coup to get rid of the previous riff Raff I do think this new admin needs to lay off with all the good they claim daily. Its getting boring to see the same things here and the more I see it the more unbelievable it becomes.

Thailand is getting better but so far it is only surface paint.

I don't think that this crew of UN representatives will be reporting back to UN headquarters with any thing of significance ,there is no reference to a UN fact finding mission , one could even think they've all been rounded up from the local Pattaya bar, matter of fact I would say the UN would be questing the countries concerned, just who do Thailand they think they are kidding with this stage managed mob of drop kicks , all very lovely to see but really Thailand should go and get a real job, and I'd be surprised if Thai elections happen before first half of 2017. there might be a constitution re-write before then. coffee1.gif

He didn't invite any of them. Every article in the press about this the last week has been blatantly deceiving. These countries are here for the UNESCAP Commission Session which happens every year. He just asked them to come across the street for another meeting, they were already here.
