webfact Posted May 28, 2015 Share Posted May 28, 2015 An invasion of elephants in a rubber plantation in ChanthaburiCHANTHABURI: -- A big herd of about 70 adult elephants and cubs have encroached on a rubber plantation in Chanthaburi’s Kaeng Hang Maew district apparently in search of food and water.Officials of Ang Rue Nai wildlife sanctuary were alerted of the presence of the elephants on Thursday by Mrs Prayoon Ritthiwong, a villager of Tambon Pawa in Kaeng Hang Maew.Wildlife officials with the backup of military personnel and local administrators were later rushed to the rubber plantation where they found the elephants foraging for food.The officials said that the elephants were of the same herd which encroached on the same area a few months ago and they were chased back to their habitat in the mountains.They assumed that the elephants might have been driven by shortage of food and water in the jungle to the rubber plantation to forage for food and water as the rubber plantation is close to fruit orchards where many tropical fruits such as durian, rambutan, banana and mangosteen were aplenty now.The herd has been placed under watch around the clock by officials to ensure that the animals will not stray into communities and harm the villagers.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/an-invasion-of-elephants-in-a-rubber-plantation-in-chanthaburi -- Thai PBS 2015-05-28 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

timmyp Posted May 28, 2015 Share Posted May 28, 2015 Do the elephants damage the rubber plantation at all? Just curious. Obviously they make it hard for the workers to move through the plantation. Your right, if you are going to write a story about elephants you would think you would take the time to find out that elephants have calves.
