webfact Posted May 29, 2015 Share Posted May 29, 2015 30-km/hr speed limit to be installed in Rattanakosin areaBANGKOK: -- The Metropolitan Police Bureau has now restricted speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour on four main roads around the Rattanakosin Island areas, and also installed two-way traffic bicycle lanes on roads in these old town areas, effective June 1.Violation of the speed limit is subject to a 1,000 baht fine.The speed limit and two-way traffic lanes for bicycling is a cooperation between the metropolitan police and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to reduce pedestrian injuries or deaths and ensure safety for bicyclists visiting the old town areas of the capital.Pol Lt-Col Somkasem Jarak, traffic police superintendent of Samranrat police station which is located in the old town part of the capital, or officially called Rattanakosin Island, named four roads that speed limit of 30 km/hr will be installed are Phra Sumen road from Yaek Bang Lampoo to Yaek Sipsamharng, Tanao road from Yaek Kokwua to Yaek Sikak Prayasri, Dinsor road from Democracy Monument to Yaek Bamrung Muang, and Bamrung Muang road from Yaek Din Sor road to Yaek Samranrat.He said motorists violating speed limit in these roads will be fined 1,000 baht.Moreover, he said, two way traffic lanes for biking is also installed on Phra-arthit, Phra Sumen, Tanao, Bamrung Muang, Kalaya Namaitree, Sanam Chai, Thaiwang, Maharaj, Na Phralarn, Na Phrathat, Rachinee, and Mahachai roads.But to enhance safety for biking, one-way traffic will be enforced on Phra Sumen road between Bang Lampoo and Yaek Sipsamharng and on Tanao road between Yaek Kokwua and Yaek Sikak Sao Ching Cha. The one-way traffic will be put on a week trial from June 1-7.Parking will also be prohibited on Phra Sumen road, between Yaek Bang Lampoo and Yaek Sipsamharng from 5 am to 9 am, and on Tanao road from 3 pm to 8 pm every day, and from Yaek Kokwua to Yaek Sikak Sao Ching Cha from 6 am to 8 pm every day except Sundays.Parking will be forbidden on Tanao road, from Yaek Kokwua to the canal bordering Wat Mahannoparam. Violation of parking ban is subject to 500 baht fine, and their vehicles wheels locked.
