US lauds Thailand for giving out quake relief, fighting illegal fishing

BANGKOK, 31 May 2015 (NNT) – Thailand has received compliments from the US Secretary of Defense for its provision of aid to Nepal and its commitment to clamping down on illegal fishing activities.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense Maj Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich stated that Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon was in Singapore to participate in the 14th Shangri-La Dialogue during May 29-30. The meeting was attended by leading defense officials and military top brass from over 30 countries, with an aim to discuss global and regional security issues.

As part of the event, Gen Prawit had an opportunity to meet with his counterparts from several countries, including US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter, who commended Thailand’s role in extending humanitarian aid and disaster relief to Nepal in the wake of the recent massive earthquake.

The US representative also recognized the Kingdom’s active participation in the Cobra Gold exercise and its devotion to eradicating illegal fishing in its waters. Moreover, he said Thailand’s recent hosting of the Special Meeting on Irregular Migration in the Indian Ocean provided a crucial stage for the international community to acknowledge and address the problem together.

Major topics covered at the Shangri-La Dialogue included member countries’ visions on global and regional security challenges, the strengthening of inter-regional defense cooperation and measures to prevent the expansion of disputes.

Once you read the article you see that "lauds" is a bit of an exaggeration. When you read the article, it shows the US used words like "compliment", "commended", and "recognized". These words are a far cry from "lauds" which means to "praise" or "glorify".

Wow, stories like this must really break the Thai-bashers hearts, as well as the junta-bashers. Still, it gives them something to do, trying to turn a positive into a negative. biggrin.png

"ASEAN member states, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar expressed serious concern after a meeting on irregular migration in Southeast Asia failed to address in any meaningful way the root causes of the region’s migrant crisis "
