Staying 90 days without a visa

Featured Replies

Hello,

Would it be possible to get a visa exempt stamp at Bkk, extend at immigration and make a Mae sai border run? I'm an American and wish to just relax in chiang Mai for 90 days.

Thanks!

you will likely get fined overstay for 6-weeks. I think the max you can extend a stamp on arrival is 2 weeks (but I could be wrong). You may need to do 2 Mae Sai runs to avoid overstay.

That might be possible, but better would be to get a proper tourist visa to start with. if you fly without a visa to Thailand the airline might want to see proof of onward travel within 30 days of arrival or deny you boarding. With a visa there is no problem and the tourist visa gives 60 days and can be extended by 30 days.

Yes, you're wrong.

He can enter the country on a US passport, get a 30 day visa exempt entry and then go to an immigration office to extend the stay by a further 30 days.

If he then crossed a border and came back into Thailand, he could get another 30 day entry. There would be no overstay or fine, although the extension would cost Baht 1900 and there would be the cost of travelling in and out of the country for the second entry.

Two visa exempt entries shouldn't be a problem, but as Mario said, why not get a single entry tourist visa which would enable you to stay for 60 days, extendable for 30 days more at immigration. No need to do a border crossing.

In either case, the O/P can go to immigrations for the extension during the last week or so of his permission to stay. The 30 day extension will be added onto his current permission without any loss of days no matter when one applies.

Tourist visa isn't expensive. You can do it via post. Why all the travel visa run stuff.....just get a tourist visa and enjoy trouble free break. Also the exempt stamp wasn't designed for 90 days.

From what I've heard, Mae Sai is not as easy as it was for a visa exempt run anymore. I may be wrong but someone else might have input.
