Thai-Malaysia border trade grows

BANGKOK, 11 June 2015 (NNT) - The Thai-Malaysia border trade shows the potential to expand following a major border trade fair held in Songkhla. There were business matching between 300 businesses from the two countries. Most of them are in the retail and restaurant sectors.

Advisor to the deputy minister of commerce Gen. Ditthaphon Sasasamit said on Thursday that the 300 Thai and Malaysian businesses were marched during the grand border trade fair scheduled for 11-14 June 2015 in Songkhla province. More than 200 of them are Thai businesses and the rest Malaysian. The categories of the businesses include retail-wholesale, restaurants, food and processed food, home decorations, hotels and traveling, construction and agricultural products.

If the value of the Thai-Malaysian border trade increased, Thailand’s border trade value this year would likely reach 1.5 trillion baht, said the advisor.

The Ministry of Commerce has brought products from Thai and Malaysian entrepreneurs to sell at the fair in the hope to help low-income people and stimulate the economy. The ministry expected that the fair would generate more than 30 million baht from the sales of products such as OTOP products, intellectual properties, handicrafts and agricultural machines.

In 2014, the Thai-Malaysian border trade value was 507.6 million baht or 51% of the total border trade of Thailand. Important exports of Thailand to Malaysia include Para rubber, computers, processed wood, cars and auto parts.
