Police, military to help fight Bangkok floods

Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra has instructed the city administration to collaborate with police and the military in efforts to fight floods as heavy rainfall has been forecast for the next few days.

Heavy downpours are expected tomorrow and Monday.

Also yesterday, the governor inspected a water-pump pond in Bangkok's Ratchathewi district, which is part of the city administration's moves to take prevention measures in flood-prone areas. Sukhumbhand has recently been under a lot pressure after Bangkok streets were flooded and commuters faced the worst traffic nightmare on June 8. He had to cut short his trip to the Netherlands, where he had gone to participate in a flood-prevention project.

I think part of the problem is cooking oil slug from the street venders blocking the drain pipes. The pumps are also clogged with garbage. Until people learn to dispose of waste properly Bangkok will always have these flooding problems.

Heavy Thailand rain don't help too.

Glad they are starting early ,

the worst job in BKK are the guys that have to go down there and clean it out ,

one time I saw them it looked like convicts on work detail , but it is a nasty job ,

the other thing is BKK is just a few feet above sea level so the water does not have anywhere to go at high tide.

Did the ever get pumps to help drain the Klongs that are land locked now ?

And when we talk of floods and high tides , did the ever hire any Dutch engineers to help figure out a plan ?

Hopefully it is not be like last time where they let the other side of the river flood....

It was convicts on a work detail, they were all over my area a week or two back also.

If the role of the police and the military is to fight floods, then they will not be involved in preventing floods.

The Junta cancelled all the previous government's planned water infrastructure projects when it came to power. To date it has taken little action to fund projects.

"Kobsidthi Silpachai, head of markets and economic research at Kasikornbank's capital markets business division, said the lack of water-infrastructure projects to prevent another flood disaster like the one in 2011 was an underlying reason for the dismal export performance of the past few years....He noted that there had been little progress on the projects included in the previous elected government's Bt350-billion water-management project." - The Nation 2015-04-28

But the good news is that the Junta will be funding the renovation of the Chao Phraya riverfront as a tourist attraction. Better bring your life jacket just in case.

what about that billions of baht tunnel to drain the water?

money already spend but no work done yet ?

Don't worry because having a drainage tunnel below water level requires a change in the laws of nature so that water flows up-hill. Rumour has it they will be using the those clever folk at Chula Uni, remember those same faceless morons that could solve the BKK traffic problems in 6 weeks, to undertake this work. No doubt all the researchers belong to HISO families so that the further millions of grant money needed for that "research" will come from the looney General's government who supports the BKK governor to the hilt, so will not be wasted on the peasants in this country. Mind you those peasants most probably have more common sense then the HISO's and the looney General/Governor combined so know already the fundamental laws of nature.
