Thai police chief proposes tighter control of Internet

You must also differentiate between online censorship that has the backing of the countries citizens and censorship that is imposed to limit personnal freedom.

Oh, so a majority of 51 should be able to decide what the other 49% should be allowed to see? This is exactly why free countries don't allow stifling of speech, expression etc. even for a minority that's disagreed with.

Freedoms only prove their worth when they can be exercised by a minority.

where is the free Internet?

I presume you've lived in those countries to make those claims. You sure do sound like you want to be a Thai more than anything in the world.

You just don't get it do you? These are draconian measures used to control their people, and THIS is what they mean by giving the people democracy?

Sure they do!!

You have no clue what is going on do you ?.

Show me where anyone said the Junta is representing democracy. They are here to take control and try to sort out what the last lot did to Thailand by taking it to the brink of civil war. This includes supressing those who instigated the murdering in the first place and would do so again in a heartbeat if they thought they could get away with it. We get daily rants from the red-shirts here who keep spraying us with foam as they proclaim yet again that a bloody battle is coming soon. They actually still believe - after everything which has happened - that if they are at the front line, Thaksin will make them rich when he comes back.

Democracy will start once even more rules and checks-and-balances have been put in place because the people who are supposed to be 'honourable' have proved themselves anything but.

Do try to keep up.

Terrible here in Chiang Mai tonight. This is my second attempt to post this. I keep getting that square one eyed frowning grey face with the right hand corner folded over.

POLITICS
Police 'know source behind counter-coup rumour'

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- National police chief General Somyot Poompanmuang said yesterday the police could identify the person who allegedly spread rumours about a possible counter-coup.

He said the rumour was spread via website Daengdeedee.com. The person in question was overseas. But the police chief declined say if the person had been actively involved in politics.

Somyot urged the government to introduce a Single Gateway communication system that prevents and screens unwanted information and pictures by deleting such information before it spreads to the public. He said this system would solve problems at the root and was better than closing websites.

He said people intending to disseminate such information could continue doing it from other websites.

He added that he had assigned assistant police chief Pol Lt-General Prawut Thawornsiri, who is an expert on the system, to study the proposal.

He said the government might assign the ICT Ministry to implement the project, which could cost up to Bt1 billion.

From the same Police Chief who won't make a decision regarding stripping a certain criminal of his police rank.

Remember when the head of the cyber police division was warning people they would be hunted down and prosecuted if they even dared clicking on "like" on any post that dared to be critical of the PTP regime?

What a complete joke the police here are. Nothing to do with democracy - they wouldn't have clue what the word means.

No. Don't remember that at all.

I do.

As far back as the 1980s people were saying that we were looking at a magic lamp, at the time there was no genie, but the smart people were saying that a genie would emerge, and as is lore, once out the genie would never go back in. I actually have a C60 cassette tape from the 1980s with a speech given by the founder of my bulletin-board group, in which he said "when this modem becomes a commonly used tool, it will never cease to be commonly used. When people become accustomed to having this tool in their lives, it will never be taken from them, and any leader that tries to switch the modems off will instantly become an ex-leader. It would be the worst career move in history, bar none."

I always liked that quote, and we still have it pinned on our b-board after all these decades. The reason I like it is because it recognises that the internet is not like other things. You can take a lot of things away from people, and they will shrug or moan, but it will not cause any great event. The internet is a tool of an entirely different nature, and the results of shutdown or hamstringing it will cause an inevitable backlash on a scale that has probably never been seen before. Many leaders worldwide have said in recent years, we wish this thing had never got out, we wish we could go back. And this is because they know it is one of the very few things that can not be stopped without bringing everything else to a grinding halt.

where is the free Internet?

Are you suggesting for a moment that the interweb is no more free in Germany and the UK than in China and Thailand?

Well, in Thailand I never went on a page that was blocked, but I am not into discussing the royal family or gambling.

In UK I read in the newspaper (no own experience) that they block everything p0rn and they start now to block hate speech (which is a great excuse to block other political opinions).

Last time I was in Germany thepiratebay was blocked, considering how many video games, music, books are illegal/banned in Germany I guess there is a lot blocked on the internet as well.

China is blocking Gmail (or all Google) I got told which I would notice, which is strange considering how much censoring Google is doing already.

But as I told I never saw any news in Thailand blocked. I am sure there are things blocked but I think 99% are casinos and red shirt propaganda.

Still I think it is wrong but not that hot, shocking news that some Asian country is blocking some content on the internet.

Try going to the Daily Mail's website from the UK ;)

Come on junta-lovers, defend this one!!

I am not a "junta-lover" JOC and I would never defend the Big Brother measures concerning internet freedom and privacy.

I would like to ask you a question, seeing as you are one of the more "outspoken" members on TVF.

Do you think the day will come when the junta starts looking into this forum and similar forums based in Thailand ?

I believe this site is not hosted in Thailand. That means Thailand would have to go to an extreme to block it.

However, blocking internet sites and services at the country firewall level tends to impact all users. The rich and elite do not like it when their use of the Internet is blocked. It is often the case in countries that do this that the list of sites blocked changes on a daily basis as external pressure is applied (from the autocrats and moralists on one side, versus the VIPs on the other side). Just think of all the opportunities for corruption, from the lowly technician up the the firewall manager.smile.png

I agree, I don't think much will come out of these threats from the Thai police chief. Hopefully they will be like any other "crackdown", a big song and a dance is made about it, someone is satisfied, and then it is forgotten and another issue is persued.

Or did they also filter the older version of the internet, like carving on stone tablets.

Well print and broadcast media isn't exactly unrestricted.

The Ancient Egyptians used to remove the names and images of unpopular Pharaohs from all their monuments after their deaths to eradicate the memory of them and all their achievements.

Also condemned them to eternal damnation according to their religious philosophy.

I certainly do, based on claims on the wider internet that they have reported Thaivisa for this and that alleged infractions of law.

The sad thing is, I reckon there are a good few stooges on here who would be only too delighted to assist in any crackdown. I do not count you among their number.

You would be correct not to include me among their number.

Regardless who someone is or how much I disagree with them I would always defend their right to give their opinion, (see Voltaire quote).

I don't think anything will come of this latest threat from the Police Chief. Most crackdowns in Thailand amount to nothing.

Information is power, and they want all the power possible. Already see that lovely "not returning happiness" (or whatever it says) if I try to go to UK Guardian... Apologists better hurry in to TV and post about what a positive thing this is, before TV gets the big shutdown....

Oh they've banned the Guardian? How come when I click on a link from a guardian newsletter email I go straight to the guardian website with no problem? I also have the guardian app on my phone & that takes me there with no problem either?

Ive got to admit though, I am quite suprised that they haven't blocked it given some of the oyher sites that they have blocked...

Of course he is saying he cannot access the Guardian, anything to make the junta look bad (as if they need any excuses) even if it is "handling the truth carelessly", it does not matter. There is a chance someone will read his post and believe his mistruths.

I thought it was against forum rules to post lies, actually it is, Forum Rule #2.

It would not bother me if the government did shut down the Guardian anyway, it is one-eyed and biased towards the Shin regime and the redshirts. I get enough of that propaganda here on the forum without having to access a newspaper for it. whistling.gif

Well print and broadcast media isn't exactly unrestricted.

At the risk of being burnt at the stake for daring to mention a certain former PM, this government (junta, coup, etc etc) is not the only one to have issues with the media.

Mr T. was possibly even more strict when it came to the media and fought a long running battle with them.

This quote came from an article on a Sydney Morning Herald website titled - "Thai media feel Thaksin's displeasure".....................

"Thailand's Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, has been accused of orchestrating a sweeping crackdown on news media that has claimed the jobs of three senior editors."

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/02/29/1077989434975.html?from=storyrhs

So you can carry on about the current PM fighting with and threatening the Thai media all you like, and you have every right to, but just remember that a lot of the people who attack this current government also defend the Shin governments so they should have a good look at the glass house they are living in.
