Germany

UK

China

Thailand

where is the free Internet?

Are you suggesting for a moment that the interweb is no more free in Germany and the UK than in China and Thailand?

Well, in Thailand I never went on a page that was blocked, but I am not into discussing the royal family or gambling.

In UK I read in the newspaper (no own experience) that they block everything p0rn and they start now to block hate speech (which is a great excuse to block other political opinions).

Last time I was in Germany thepiratebay was blocked, considering how many video games, music, books are illegal/banned in Germany I guess there is a lot blocked on the internet as well.

China is blocking Gmail (or all Google) I got told which I would notice, which is strange considering how much censoring Google is doing already.

But as I told I never saw any news in Thailand blocked. I am sure there are things blocked but I think 99% are casinos and red shirt propaganda.

Still I think it is wrong but not that hot, shocking news that some Asian country is blocking some content on the internet.

Thank you for proving that you do not understand the difference between control of the Internet in places like China, as compared to Germany/UK.

Let me reduce your level of confusion.

Countries like China have "country firewall" operated by the government. The government censors access and content on a broad scale, according to its own ideas about what is appropriate. This is pure censorship.

In countries like Germany/UK/US etc, there is no "country firewall". Instead, there are various major Internet service points. On a case by case basis, a company or the government may file a lawsuit claiming that a particular internet site or service is breaking the law. If the courts agree, than a court order is issued and that particular site or service must be blocked by the country's various Internet operators.

My advice to everyone is to study up on the use of private VPN services. These may be a real necessity in Thailand in the very near future.

Can you say North Korea...

The fact you're even suggesting North Korea confirms fool status. Thailand doesn't resemble it in the slightest or if it did you'd already be in a gulag along with 3 generations of your family in tow

And you know this is fact because? coffee1.gif

Try to go to the The Mail online website on a TOT line and it will be blocked and has been since the coup. You can however go to the same website via AIS. You can't go to Weakileaks. But what is been blocked is not the issue, the issue is that if they only have one gateway to control they will be able to block more which = less freedom = more oppression.

Piratebay was blocked because it contravened international IP laws not because of online censorship.

You must also differentiate between online censorship that has the backing of the countries citizens and censorship that is imposed to limit personnal freedom.

Information is power, and they want all the power possible. Already see that lovely "not returning happiness" (or whatever it says) if I try to go to UK Guardian... Apologists better hurry in to TV and post about what a positive thing this is, before TV gets the big shutdown....

There are no restrictions to access the http://www.theguardian.com/uk website. If you go to the website now you might even catch the story about Thailand in the section around the world: Elephant gores man to death at beachside restaurant.

Only going by Wiki here----but they don't rate Thailand as bad as America, Russia or the UK for internet censorship-, that's probably because they also rate surveillance, how much the government is looking at you, along with what sites they do not want you to look at

I am not in anyway for censorship---but I think everyone knows why the The dailymail. was blocked alocacoc----it was certainly not for news coverage.

UK doesn't block porn at all. Not unless it's changed in the past 3 years, key words are flagged and your IP will be tracked and the Serious Crimes team might pay you a visit.

Pirate bay is by defintion a law breaking site, as it's pirating software, games movies and music, which is a Federal Crime in the US for starters, it's not any different from buying counterfeit videos from the malls.

China is a communist country, I have worked for the Chinese for the past 3 years, at home they're monitored, as soon as they get back to the Middle East, they browse all the porn sites etc. How would you notice if the Chinese blocked google?

You're wrong about the blocked sites only being red shirt propaganda, and Casinos, that really does show you're lack of knowledge, you're simply guessing, and speculating.

Come on junta-lovers, defend this one!!

I am not a "junta-lover" JOC and I would never defend the Big Brother measures concerning internet freedom and privacy.

I would like to ask you a question, seeing as you are one of the more "outspoken" members on TVF.

Do you think the day will come when the junta starts looking into this forum and similar forums based in Thailand ?

"This website has inappropriate content and has been suspended."

Inappropriate for whom and for what true reason?

Let them block the internet and please let it be a.s.a.p.... Old anachronistic dinosaurs don't learn from history and they'll be in for a big surprise that tanks have no answer for.

So let's have it... and as soon as possible please.

I certainly do, based on claims on the wider internet that they have reported Thaivisa for this and that alleged infractions of law.

The sad thing is, I reckon there are a good few stooges on here who would be only too delighted to assist in any crackdown. I do not count you among their number.

I believe this site is not hosted in Thailand. That means Thailand would have to go to an extreme to block it.

However, blocking internet sites and services at the country firewall level tends to impact all users. The rich and elite do not like it when their use of the Internet is blocked. It is often the case in countries that do this that the list of sites blocked changes on a daily basis as external pressure is applied (from the autocrats and moralists on one side, versus the VIPs on the other side). Just think of all the opportunities for corruption, from the lowly technician up the the firewall manager.smile.png

its funny for his even mentioned suggestion with all the corruption in the police force... its like one criminal checking another criminal and complaining about how they don't get to steal as much as the other does...

then... when does speaking commit a crime? or voicing your ideas on things...

yet people die everyday from some form of 'lack of policing' from actual 'actions', not of 'words'...

again... its like the police force saying its necessary to bunch up into groups into a city where they can control the traffic so they can give fines for no helmets...while people drive crazy on the roads outside of the cities and people don't wear helmits...

about as crazy as his idea is now...

I think a distributed decentralised internet 2.0 (I don't mean web 2.0, but infrastructure that can be built) gets closer every time I read something like this. It's a bit like trying to raise taxes which pushes more people underground, and the net result is the same revenues but more disgruntled people and more bureaucracy that has to be paid for. Keep it simple Mr Gov't (all countries, not referring to Thailand here).

Don't like your ISP/on ramp? Do a deal with everyone else in your street and share availability.

There's already a system in place for blocking entire websites based on the domain name and/or individual URLs from what I've seen.

All they need to do is add it to the list.

Yup. just see what happens when an overseas friend sends something from the Daily Mail.

It doesn't happen, apart from the Green screen of Death.

For instance;

The Human Rights Watch Thailand web page, as it appeared Thursday. The government has blocked access to the page inside the country.

Trying to directly HRW.org/asia/thailand results in a redirection to a splash screen from the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, which reads "this website has inappropriate content and has been suspended."

Some web pages from BBC One, BBC Two, CNN, Yahoo! News, the Post-Intelligencer newspaper (Seattle, USA), and The Age newspaper (Melbourne, Australia) dealing with Thai political content are blocked

Then, www.dailymail.co.uk

.

.

.

Daily Mail was blocked because of Lese Majeste .... in regards to unauthorized pictures.

Worked for or worked in? I was there for the over 5 years until 18 months ago and they definitely monitored and censored. Google had terrible problems which ended up with them pulling their search engine out of China itself and having it located in Hong Kong. I regularly saw current news items on BBC online which were not accessible amongst others. Funnily enough had little problem accessing porn sites............thumbsup.gif
