Police chief proposes tighter control of Internet
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Police Commissioner General Pol Gen Somyos Pumpanmuang Wednesday proposed the use of single Internet gateway so that the authorities could check and filter out inappropriate information and photos.

Somyos raised the proposal after he said the authorities had found that a website abroad, daengdeedee.com spread rumours about a possible countercoup.

where is the free Internet?

I presume you've lived in those countries to make those claims. You sure do sound like you want to be a Thai more than anything in the world.

You just don't get it do you? These are draconian measures used to control their people, and THIS is what they mean by giving the people democracy?

Sure they do!!

Can you say North Korea...

The fact you're even suggesting North Korea confirms fool status. Thailand doesn't resemble it in the slightest or if it did you'd already be in a gulag along with 3 generations of your family in tow

its slow enough already and now they want slow it down more so they can "check"

It has nothing to do with "checking" it's very much about control!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't know that rumors were illegal in Thailand, or is it only rumors are illegal for the selected few?

Seems as though this government is seriously frightened of it's people having information that is not censored first?

Information is power, and they want all the power possible. Already see that lovely "not returning happiness" (or whatever it says) if I try to go to UK Guardian... Apologists better hurry in to TV and post about what a positive thing this is, before TV gets the big shutdown....

From the same Police Chief who won't make a decision regarding stripping a certain criminal of his police rank.

Remember when the head of the cyber police division was warning people they would be hunted down and prosecuted if they even dared clicking on "like" on any post that dared to be critical of the PTP regime?

What a complete joke the police here are. Nothing to do with democracy - they wouldn't have clue what the word means.

where is the free Internet?

Are you suggesting for a moment that the interweb is no more free in Germany and the UK than in China and Thailand?

Well, in Thailand I never went on a page that was blocked, but I am not into discussing the royal family or gambling.

In UK I read in the newspaper (no own experience) that they block everything p0rn and they start now to block hate speech (which is a great excuse to block other political opinions).

Last time I was in Germany thepiratebay was blocked, considering how many video games, music, books are illegal/banned in Germany I guess there is a lot blocked on the internet as well.

China is blocking Gmail (or all Google) I got told which I would notice, which is strange considering how much censoring Google is doing already.

But as I told I never saw any news in Thailand blocked. I am sure there are things blocked but I think 99% are casinos and red shirt propaganda.

Still I think it is wrong but not that hot, shocking news that some Asian country is blocking some content on the internet.

For instance;

The Human Rights Watch Thailand web page, as it appeared Thursday. The government has blocked access to the page inside the country.

Trying to directly HRW.org/asia/thailand results in a redirection to a splash screen from the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, which reads "this website has inappropriate content and has been suspended."

Some web pages from BBC One, BBC Two, CNN, Yahoo! News, the Post-Intelligencer newspaper (Seattle, USA), and The Age newspaper (Melbourne, Australia) dealing with Thai political content are blocked

Then, www.dailymail.co.uk

was doing some research on Thai history and was surprised that a lot of sites that I would have thought were LM havent been blocked. the one site I do know of that was blocked recently was documenting the armies connections with various scams. I think they are mostly just concerned with hiding their own corruption from the general public.

They have blocked a story on 17 year old Bindi Irwin about her growing up. She is the daughter of Steve Irwin the crockodile man from Oz. An eco warrior who should be open to everyone. Only descriptive word is stupid.
