The next great idea will to have a soldier standing behind everyone

who uses the Internet, just to make sure you are not up to anything

subversive or looking at p0rn or even the Daily Mail website.

regards worgeordie

They won't do that - there would be no one left to water the greens on the military golf courses!

My I suggest the North Korean model of Internet Control could work in Thailand.

Thais lived 100s of years without internet, so another 100 years as obedient peasants shouldn't be a problem

OK

Would that make you happy with how it is here?

There's already a system in place for blocking entire websites based on the domain name and/or individual URLs from what I've seen.

All they need to do is add it to the list.

Such primitive filtering represents no obstacle at all to anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together, including most sixth graders these days I'm guessing. None.

Interestingly North Korea only has one ISP which is actually a Thai joint venture by Loxley Pacific - maybe just testing the new system.... Edited by Orac

OK

Last I read it was a single ISP from China.

But of course that may have changed.

It'd be an experience to visit North korea.

Are you suggesting for a moment that the interweb is no more free in Germany and the UK than in China and Thailand?

Well, in Thailand I never went on a page that was blocked, but I am not into discussing the royal family or gambling.

In UK I read in the newspaper (no own experience) that they block everything p0rn and they start now to block hate speech (which is a great excuse to block other political opinions).

Last time I was in Germany thepiratebay was blocked, considering how many video games, music, books are illegal/banned in Germany I guess there is a lot blocked on the internet as well.

China is blocking Gmail (or all Google) I got told which I would notice, which is strange considering how much censoring Google is doing already.

But as I told I never saw any news in Thailand blocked. I am sure there are things blocked but I think 99% are casinos and red shirt propaganda.

Still I think it is wrong but not that hot, shocking news that some Asian country is blocking some content on the internet.

And this was the basis of your original comments? whistling.gif

UK doesn't block porn at all. Not unless it's changed in the past 3 years, key words are flagged and your IP will be tracked and the Serious Crimes team might pay you a visit.

Pirate bay is by defintion a law breaking site, as it's pirating software, games movies and music, which is a Federal Crime in the US for starters, it's not any different from buying counterfeit videos from the malls.

China is a communist country, I have worked for the Chinese for the past 3 years, at home they're monitored, as soon as they get back to the Middle East, they browse all the porn sites etc. How would you notice if the Chinese blocked google?

You're wrong about the blocked sites only being red shirt propaganda, and Casinos, that really does show you're lack of knowledge, you're simply guessing, and speculating.

Worked for or worked in? I was there for the over 5 years until 18 months ago and they definitely monitored and censored. Google had terrible problems which ended up with them pulling their search engine out of China itself and having it located in Hong Kong. I regularly saw current news items on BBC online which were not accessible amongst others. Funnily enough had little problem accessing porn sites............thumbsup.gif

Only worked for, they told me about the monitoring back home and they're like fat kids in a chocolate shop out in the Middle East where their project is where they have no restrictions on their access.

Some purn websites are blocked here. That's all i know about. Am confident the Thai authorities are talking to china in order to obtain more info on 'great firewall' techniques. Yeah, agree it's control of discussion. We find such in many places, maybe even xxxxx.

The tighter the lid is screwed down, the more dramatic the eventual outcome. Proposals such as these are an admission of failure.

They had a pretty effective filter on the Internet in the UAE when I lived there. Didn't slow down connection as far as I could tell and I doubt it was an admission of failure.

Actually the filter was not applied at the Higher Colleges of Technology where I worked, supposedly not to limit legitimate research ... but they did keep a log of whatever sites you accessed.

Most of the blocked sites within the UAE are all connected to Non Islamic activities, porn sites are blocked but Jihadi forums seem to be fine, some ISP providers in the ME also use word filters, For some reason certain VOIPs were blocked, pretty sure Skype was for a while as it clashed with the Telecom companies, can't recall where else in the ME Skype is blocked for the same reasons, as in losing lots of money to free calls from laptops smart phones and PC's.

The whole clamping down on the internet sounds more and more like paranoia, and a feeling the authorities need to subject their minions to even more controlling measures.

Sounds More like a desperation tactic, with 93% popularity and a happy happy country, what exactly are these Junta scared of ?

Can you say North Korea...

The fact you're even suggesting North Korea confirms fool status. Thailand doesn't resemble it in the slightest or if it did you'd already be in a gulag along with 3 generations of your family in tow

How was the statement of the curent Thai 'Government' to have closer ties with Nortkorea some weeks ago..??

Still I think it is wrong but not that hot, shocking news that some Asian country is blocking some content on the internet.

For instance;

The Human Rights Watch Thailand web page, as it appeared Thursday. The government has blocked access to the page inside the country.

Trying to directly HRW.org/asia/thailand results in a redirection to a splash screen from the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, which reads "this website has inappropriate content and has been suspended."

Some web pages from BBC One, BBC Two, CNN, Yahoo! News, the Post-Intelligencer newspaper (Seattle, USA), and The Age newspaper (Melbourne, Australia) dealing with Thai political content are blocked

Then, www.dailymail.co.uk

.

.

.

Never mind, the Thaksin haters here will think it is perfectly justified and have no idea in what direction this country is going.

Dark times ahead for sure.

I presume you've lived in those countries to make those claims. You sure do sound like you want to be a Thai more than anything in the world.

You just don't get it do you? These are draconian measures used to control their people, and THIS is what they mean by giving the people democracy?

Sure they do!!

Draconian? Internet ain't been around that long has it?

Or did they also filter the older version of the internet, like carving on stone tablets.

I think its a great idea. Actually, they should ban ALL use of The Internet.

Lets get real service back, when we visit shops here. No more Hay Day and Candy Crush!

In his bank account no doubt. Did anyone else see the recruitment offering to pay people to write posts supporting the government?

I gather you don't know the definition of the term draconian then?

It's perfectly apt to this latest junta fuelled inferiority complex malarkey ?

Draconian fits perfectly, as does obtuse with your reply

Just waiting for the day when Elon Musk beams global-wide internet from low Earth orbit. Block this! [grabs crotch]

Elon Musk held a SpaceX event over the weekend at which he announced plans for a new Seattle headquarters and unveiled a long-term proposal to build a high-speed, low-latency satellite system that would circle the entire planet with internet capability.

Don't think he meant Thailand is already on a par with NK but moving in that direction.

From the same Police Chief who won't make a decision regarding stripping a certain criminal of his police rank.

Remember when the head of the cyber police division was warning people they would be hunted down and prosecuted if they even dared clicking on "like" on any post that dared to be critical of the PTP regime?

What a complete joke the police here are. Nothing to do with democracy - they wouldn't have clue what the word means.

No. Don't remember that at all.
