Asparargus production is generating more income for Surin farmers

Farmers in two tambon in the northeastern province of Surin are making 15,000-17,000 baht more per year from organic asparagus production for export.

Peerawat Sangnoi (พีระวัฒน์ สังข์น้อย), chief of Surin Agriculture Office, said 100 farmers in tambon Khorkho (คอโค) and Na Bua (นาบัว) in Muang district are producing asparagus in 100 rai of land on condition that their produce must be chemical-free. Thirty-eight of them could meet quality standard set by the Organic Agriculture Standard Office, Mr. Peerawat said.

The price of asparagus is guaranteed at 15-46 baht a kilo depending on its quality. The output is good and each farmer has 15,000-17,000 baht per year from asparagus sales in addition to their income from rice and other crops, he said.

Sounds great if they can get their stuff to the right market. But how long will that market last. There are a lot of rice farmers who probably would like to improve their incomes.

I still think someday they are gonna find oil up in Surin but I don't know much about geology.
