Visa exemption + Tourist Visa

Featured Replies

Hi i'm new to this and I've spent the last few hours reading tons about Thai visas.

Please could someone advise me on my best option.

I am currently on day 21 of my second 30 day visa exemption. I was intending to do a visa run to get my third visa exemption in the next week however, i read online we can just get a 30 day visa exemption extension from immigration office - is this correct?

I only need the extension, which runs out on the 30th this month until the 15th of July - where i have a flight to Indonesia for a month. Is it possible once in Indonesia to get a tourist visa even though i have already used previous visa exemptions?

I am 100% percent tourist and do not work here, however, i am currently writing a book and enjoy Thailand as a base for travelling.

I am a 24 year old male.

I also used 3 visa exemption stamps in late 2014, early 2015 for a total of 67 days - but they were sporadic with clear evidence of other travelling.

Thanks in advance,

Will

You can get a 30 day extension of your visa exempt entry at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht.

Having a visa exempt entry and then an extension will in no way effect getting a tourist visa.

Jakarta may want to see a ticket out of the country and proof of accommodation here to get the visa..

Book writing could be considered working so you should keep that information to yourself when applying for extensions or visas.

Thanks you both for the replies.

So the rule about staying only 90 days within 6 months does not matter when it comes to applying for tourist visa? - because a 60 day tourist visa would take me way over 90 days in a 6 month period.

Also - what sort of questions do they ask when get the extension to the exemption or is it simply hand the money over and done.

I already have my flight to Indonesia booked so i should take this with?

Thanks again

There is no 90 day "rule"

That 90 day rule got kicked out years ago.

The 90 day rule went away well over 6 year ago and only applied to visa exempt entries.

They ask no questions when you apply for the extension. No need to a show ticket out.

Just a completed TM7 application form with a 4cm X 6cm photo attached, copies of your passport photo page, entry/permitted to stay stamp and departure card.

The 90 day within 6 month rule was dropped some time ago although it is still mentioned on some Embassy/Consulate websites. It will have no bearing on your application for a tourist visa.

They will ask for the reason for extension which is Tourism. It's a straightforward application form and you simply write Tourism in the space for reason. And yes its a good idea to take details of your onward flight as it demonstrates that you are not planning to take root. You do not need to tell the immigration officer about your intention to apply for a tourist visa in Indonesia.
