Thai tourism remains intact despite MERS

BANGKOK, 22 June 2015 (NNT) – The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) has expressed confidence in the government’s measures to control a MERS outbreak in Thailand. A number of Thai tourists visiting South Korea where the virus has proliferated has slightly decreased.

President of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) Charoen Wang-ananon said more than 30% of Thai tourists had already cancelled trips to South Korea but the Thai tourism had not yet been affected by the disease. The president added that MERS’ impacts and severity were lower than other epidemics.

As for the ICAO’s downgrading of safety standards of the Thai aviation, Mr Charoen said aviation regulatory bodies from Europe would not use the measures which could severely affect the Thai aviation industry. He also suggested that Thailand should urgently tackle its aviation problems.

BANGKOK: -- Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanawarangkura said Sunday she was confident tourist arrivals in Thailand would not be affected by MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) spread abroad as there has not been a case of booking cancellation.

The minister toured the Suvarnabhumi international airport during the weekend to inspect the preparedness of authorities concerned in coping with tourists arriving from countries where there was an outbreak of MERS.

She said she believed tourists were confident with Thailand’s health management and prevention of several contagious diseases in the past such as bird flu and SARS.

Tourist arrivals this year will remain unchanged at 28.8 million representing an increase of about 20 percent from the previous year’s 26.5 million arrivals.

Meanwhile, the Public Health Ministry said that three passengers who travelled to Thailand in the same flight with an Omani man who was confirmed to be infected with MERS had been cleared of the virus.

Not a single booking cancelled ? I suppose she's checked every airline, travel agency and hotel personally.

She might care to remember how LoS handled the bird flu, it was denied stiff for a month to protect poultry exports. Yes that certainly inspires confidence.

I hope that Thailand stays MERS free,SARS free as well as Ebola free,

but I wished these diseases would surface right in the midst of the Taliban and the

ISIL bunch, maybe something like this would make them all unlikeable even to themselves.

Could you just imagine! A would with a lot less terrorists, that would not be such a bad thing,

at least in my opinion.

Here is a list of activities in Thailand that are significantly greater threats of injury, disease or death than contracting MERS:

1) Lifting your overloaded luggage at baggage claim

2) Taking a taxi

3) Walking down the sidewalk

4) Eating from a food cart

5) Visiting a bar

6) Inviting anyone back to your room

7) Going to a clinic for treatment of a sudden rash

Enjoy your visit!
