Collapse of scaffolding leaves two dead

By Si Thu Lwin

MANDALAY:-- The collapse of steel scaffolding at the under-construction Pullman Hotel in Mandalay on June 20 left two workers dead and 18 injured, rescue workers said yesterday.

The accident occurred in an area where workers were installing the concrete floor of the hotel’s swimming pool.

A number of victims were trapped beneath the scaffolding, prompting a rescue operation involving the Fire Services Department, the Red Cross Society, doctors from the Ministry of Health and volunteers from civil society groups.

At press time, more than 24 hours after the accident occurred, one injured survivor and one of the deceased were still trapped, said an official from the Fire Services Department.
