Hi a couple of questions,

can my thai wife who is in the UK on a settlement visa obtain a british passport and still keep her thai passport once she is eligable for permanent stay in the UK. Also we have a baby who was born in England can he hold both the british and a thai passport at the same time. Or can they both only hold 1 passport.

As i have been informed by a freind that they can now only hold 1 passport?

Any links to the appropiate websites would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Jay

Previous posts suggest that your wife can retain her Thai passport once she qualifies for a UK one.

There have been question from time to time about leaving the UK on a UK passport, then entering Thailand on a Thai one

It does not seem to be uncommon.

You can apply for a Thai passport for your son, based on his Thai mother..

Contact the Thai Embassy in London for the procedure.

K.Wife has both.

UK/EU for out of Blighty...Thai for entry to LOS.....and V/Versa ..

Only problems that we forsee would be when we want to visit my relatives in Auz (via LOS) using her Thai PP cause she then needs a "Thai Farangs aliens"visa.

If however she would use her UK/EU one then its only a formality (£20 quid computerised stamp) :o

If your baby was born in the UK and either parents are British or settled in the UK, then your baby is also British under section s1(1)(a) or s1(1)( b ) of the BRITISH NATIONALITY ACT 1981 respectively.

A child of a Thai mother is also Thai under section 7 of Thailand's Nationality Act.

A dual UK/Thai citizen child may apply for both UK/Thai passports. If your child was born in the UK then he/she should obtain a Thai birth certificate and passport from the Royal Thai Embassy.

When your wife qualifies, she may also apply for British Nationality and become a dual UK/Thai citizen.

Yes your thai wife can hold a thai and british passport at the same time once she has qualified for one, and traveling wise it is better if you are travelling to thailand to use the thai passport as she will have indefinate leave to remain in the uk which will mean no visa requirements if you are staying longer than 30 days. My wife has both which she only required the british one 6 months ago. Our daughter was born in the uk and held a british passport when we moved to thailand this year in june we went to the embassy and got her birth certificate in thai in london, also as we were travelling in a short time they gave us a passport for travel to thailand only one way, like the old paper passport the uk used to have for 12 months, and then we applied for a full thai one when we got here, but if you have time on your hands you can get the full thai one in the uk the wait is usually about 6 to 10 weeks, after the documentation has been sent to thailand and back. As for the one passport only i heard your child can have both until they reach 18 and then they have to decide which one they want!! dont know for sure though!!, :o
