George I am asking my partner online right now .... but as far as I know no license has been awarded yet

No license for the frequency/bandwidth ... apparently CAT owns that and have not granted a license

Some information here:

This site is in Thai only: http://www.wimaxthailand.com/home.php

Also -Intel trials at the end of year 2005- Source: Intel:

"In Thailand, WiMAX trials are being conducted in the communities of Khorat, Chiang Mai and Roi Et to test services for rural and suburban healthcare, education, SMB incubation, agriculture supply chain integration and other consumer services such as Voice over IP. The trials will help assess technical and commercial viability models using different backhaul and last-mile WiMAX architecture and will be reviewed by international aid organizations as a possible blueprint to use across the ASEAN countries."

I would guess a minimum of 1 to 2 years (IMHO).

They need new frequencies for Wimax, and there will be no frequency allocations until they set up National Broadcasting Commission. The selection process is due to start again once the new Senate is endorsed by a new Election Commission which will be endorsed real soon.

We are the same point we were back in 2000.

What is more interesting is Wimax experience in the rest of the world. It was supposed to be rolled out in Indonesia under Canopy name, some two years ago. It's one of those solutions that can revolutionise the world but never arrives. They were saying the same about Bluetooth, though.

I read once that Wimax speed is greatly affected if you are not in a direct line of sight.

In another news, Thailand is not very interested in 3G technologies, they think there's no real demand (which maybe true). Perhaps they consider Wimax in the same category.

I can't pick up Dtac's Edge in Bangkok anymore, it's been gone for months - there goes 2.5G service.

Odds are we'll have Wimax after its well and truly obsolete.

.. and it'll be grossly overpriced and will run at about 10% of the speed advertised.

Totster :o
