US FDA bans trans fats, is Thailand next?

Featured Replies

Artificial trans fat will be removed from the U.S. food supply over the next three years under a ruling by regulators that the products pose health risks that contribute to heart disease.

There’s no longer a scientific consensus that partially hydrogenated oils, the main source of trans fat, are generally recognized as safe, according to a final decision released Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration. The oils are used for frying and in baked goods as well as in confections.

What are the chances of a similar ban following in Thailand?

Does it matter? American corporations are just going to sneak in something else to take its place, that's even worse than trans-fat. Monsanto, a lovely, caring company, is promoting their soybean oil … genetically modified.

So there will be another 30 years of growing obesity and heart attacks, before the FDA stops that one.

Thais too, have always been accomplished at going in the back door, when the front was locked.

But having said that, the use of trans fat in processed foods in LOS is generally much lower already than the States. Same goes for HFCS. That's one of the things I always liked about Thailand.

Good to know, thanks. I hear Thailand is sugarcane country though.

It is. That's why I will drink the occasional Coke in LOS. Or any third world country. Won't touch 'em in the west because of the HFCS.

I've never seen hydrogenated fat, or any of its code names, listed on Thai ingredients.

MOVED to food

Butter contains about 3.3 grams of trans fats per 100 grams of butter. So to call butter a trans fat is 96.7% wrong. And that's not counting the vitamins and beneficial oils it does contain

GM food is the greatest development in agriculture since the plow. It allows more nutritious food at many times greater crop yields with vastly less pesticides and fertilizers. It is the key to stopping deforestation. Without GMOs, we will need to cut down every forest on Earth to grow enough food. With them, we just might have a chance not to go extinct along with the rest of the animals on this planet.

.

I was actually referring to such things as high fructose corn syrup, which is produced using genetically modified bacteria, and is responsible for a host of illnesses. HFCS is anything but nutritious.

Without GMOs, we will need to cut down every forest on Earth to grow enough food.

That's an extreme statement, and is far from accurate.

FDA will save us again. NOT!!!

Almost all "margarine" products produced locally, are hydrogenated.

I've bought some "Best Foods" margarine and its clearly stated on the label.

Last time at Makro, I've spent about 10 minutes at the butter/margarine section, to get a "non-crappy ingredients" butter/margarine, but to no avail.
