In a recent visit to The Sanctuary of Truth outside Pattaya I saw this massive wooden carving.

My first impression was that it was some sort of demon, but then I noticed that the hands were in what appears to be dharmachakra mudra (or at least, as close as could be achieved in a wooden carving of this size).

I don't know very much about Mahayana Buddhism, but I assume this figure comes from that tradition. I do recall that some Bodhisattvas have a demonic aspect. Is this a demon Bodhisattva preaching dhamma? And if not, what does it represent? Can anyone put a name to the figure? My curiosity is well and truly piqued.

Thanks.
