Vegetable prices skyrocket in Korat with parsley now fetching 200 baht/kg

KORAT: -- Acute water shortage has substantially slashed the production of vegetables and driven up their prices.

Mrs Samrit Rithmai, a vegetable vendor at Suranakorn Muangmai market, the largest fruit and vegetable wholesale and retail market in Nakhon Ratchasima, said that the price of parsley, for an example, has recently gone up to 200 baht a kilogramme which is the highest this year.

She attributed the skyrocketing prices of parsley and other vegetables to substantial drop in production as a direct result of water shortage in farmland.

Mr Sutthiroj Kongkaew, director of Lam Takong project, disclosed that the usable amount of water at Lam Takong reservoir now amounts to 57 million cubic metre or only 18 percent of its full capacity of 314 million cubic metres.

About 500,000 cubic metre of water are released for tap water production each day and the remaining usable amount of water in the reservoir will last for just two months, he said, adding that the water situation is most critical.

There is no water left for farming purpose, he said.

Just where is Korat? The naming seems to imply a specific location, such as a town or city. However, the Korat Plateau occupies a fairly substantial chunk of Thailand, and appears to be synonymous with the Isaan region. What are its boundaries, and where is its centre?

Doesn't the Thai water table know that Prayut invoked Article 44?

Anything done or said that disparages even indirectly the repuation of the Junta is criminal.

Prayut should order all the nation's water to rise up and flow to the nearest dam or canal for attitude adjustment.

If the Thai people aren't exempt, why should natrure? wai2.gif

I've very rarely seen parsley in Thailand. I bet they mean coriander leaf, aka cilantro. Anyway, US$6/kilo is a great price ... at least so in USA and Europe.

OR a good bunch of parsleyfacepalm.gif

Hell of a lot of parsley in a kilo.!

I think he's talking about coriander (puk chee). And of course Thai communities eat this by the ton.
