US report highlights Indonesia's poor law enforcement

JAKARTA: -- Despite progress as one of the world’s biggest democracies, Indonesia’s law enforcement is still substandard and rampant with human rights violations, according a report by the US government states.

The Jakarta Post reported that the 2014 US Department of State’s Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, released last week, highlighted the Indonesian government’s failures in conducting transparent public investigations into some allegations of unjustified killings, torture and abuses by security forces.

The report mentioned a number of examples, including the 2013 killing of pro-independence campaigners at a prayer service and flag raising ceremony in Sorong, West Papua, which allegedly involved security forces.

The report labelled Papua as an area prone to violence, mainly in relation the separatist movement there.

Internal investigators from the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police were also criticized in the report for rarely disclosing the findings of internal investigations into crimes committed by military personnel and police.

This report will be used by the Department of State and other US government agencies as a guide for American foreign police. US congress will also use the report to determine the allocation of foreign aid and security sector assistance.

You can try as hard as you like Thai PBS, but you will not deflect anyone here's attention away from the issues in Thailand.

The usual bull for local consumption, "ahh but, see they are worse than us".

I am not sure they are deflecting, though... maybe. This report is not new and has long been tied to DoS and DoD training and assistance programs the US has conducted. There has been more than one time the US has had to stop training a country because a report was released that immediately tied the training funds to the report findings. This was made and integral part of the legislation. It was this ambush rule that the US ran into with regard to Egypt. Few note it can be waivered. It is just not true that funds, etc, must stop. It is some multi layered carrot and stick approach to using US funds to impact democracy and human rights- as seem by the US.

But it's OK. foreigners now have the lifelong right to use property.

Where does the u.s get off criticizing other countries for whatever their worms can dig up ? and these people are worms ! "Get out there and dig up whatever negative nonsense you can find", they must be told. Straighten out your own messes before you dump on others, or are you just doing this to deflect attention to your many failings ?
