PHUKET: -- A large chunk of Phuket’s busy bypass road where drain construction has been ongoing for several months has started to crack and there are concerns that the road could collapse should works not be completed or repairs carried out soon.

Should the section of road collapse it will further reduce the width of the already narrowed road and will surely make it even more hazardous for motorists, warned project engineer Chalermpol Wongkiattikun of the Department of Highways in Bangkok.

The delays in the construction of the drains have been blamed on a lack of sand, Mr Chalermpol said.

“I am concerned at the state of the road in front of the Index Living Mall,” Mr Chalermpol told The Phuket News.

“We have to work slowly on the drain construction because there have been delays in receiving the sand we need from Phang Nga.

“However, once the sand has been delivered work will continue.”

Here's a tip for the Department of Highways: After the next heavy rain, just send some trucks over to the intersection of Nanai Rd and Soi Banzaan in Patong and scoop up the tons of sand that will have washed down from the construction site on the hillside into the road. Happens every time it rains.

As long as they have a good excuse for the delay. whistling.gif

Take some trucks and a front end loader and head to the beach. Problem solved. Hmm maybe not you want clean sand right not sand with brown fecal matter included. Does fecal matter bind with cement and sand and of course copious amounts of stone?

Stories like these are only available in Thailand ... I usually send the most funny of them to friends in my homecountry so they can see what they are missing ... Its like going to Circus every day with only clowns performing ... cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Story is funny but if the sand is to mixed to make concrete then cannot use beach sand as the the salt in it will cause the concrete to be of poor strength.

No sand for months & months yet construction in Phuket has slowed considerably. What a load of <deleted>. Is this another case where the contractor has used the payment for something else. There are drainage works all over the place & can guarantee the road will only be repaired well into the future leaving narrower roads & unsafe conditions.

Re-tarmacking the road is probably a different contractor as separate contracts create more opportunities for graft.

Roads are in a dreadful state in so many places right now, one of the worst examples being on Chaofa West at Chalong Circle where the police are still insisting on u-turns much of the time despite it being effectively down to one lane.
