Migrant deadline passes for Cambodian workers in Thailand

A last-minute rush of largely Cambodian, Burmese and Laotian undocumented workers is expected to descend today on Thailand’s one-stop service centres for visas and work permits (OCCS), as Thai authorities yesterday signalled a crackdown on illegal labour.

More than 100,000 Cambodian workers in Thailand could face arrest and deportation after the deadline for reapplying for a work permit extension came and went yesterday.

“There are a significant number of workers at risk of arrest and deportation, or as usual, arrest, extortion and release … [among] the most prominent features of Thai migration policy for decades now,” said Thailand-based migrant expert and workers’ rights advocate Andy Hall.

Minister urges Thailand to extend visa registration
Thu, 2 July 2015

Cambodia's minister of foreign affairs yesterday urged the Thai government to extend the registration window for undocumented migrant workers, with more than 100,000 Cambodians facing deportation following the expiration of Tuesday’s deadline.

In a statement, Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said he had advised Cambodia’s ambassador to Thailand to urgently contact the Thai Labour and Foreign ministries to push for an extension until the end of the year.

Namhong said the extra time was needed to organise passports and permits for “tens of thousands” of undocumented Cambodian workers in Thailand.
